Roll, John M.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1996
The efficacy of different schedules of reinforcement (progressive and fixed) for promoting and sustaining cigarette abstinence was compared using 60 cigarette smokers. Results found that the progressive and fixed groups achieved greater levels of abstinence than controls and that the progressive group was less likely to resume smoking. (Author/CR)

Shriver, Mark D.; Allen, Keith D. – School Psychology Quarterly, 1996
Time-out is an effective child deceleration technique. Aeschleman, Stanley R.; Williams, Margaret L. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1989
The authors respond to comments of colleagues concerning their study on reinforcement contingencies defined by the response deprivation hypothesis with moderately mentally retarded persons. Mason, Susan Ann; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1989
The study evaluated the effects of a time-efficient reinforcer assessment package with three preschoolers with autism. Systematic assessment of children's reinforcers for correct responding virtually eliminated nontargeted maladaptive behaviors, and yielded expected improvements in accuracy. (Author/DB)

Iwata, Brian A.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1994
The self-injurious behaviors of nine subjects with developmental disabilities were observed in settings in which play materials, experimenter demands, or social attention were systematically varied. Neef, Nancy A.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1992
This study examined how 3 students (ages 14-18, with emotional or behavioral disorders) allocated their responding across 2 concurrently available tasks associated with unequal rates and equal versus unequal qualities of reinforcement. It found that time allocated to concurrent response alternatives was approximately proportional to obtained…

Northup, John; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1991
Functional analysis conducted during a 90-minute evaluation session identified maintaining variables for aggressive behavior and an alternative replacement response in 3 individuals with severe handicaps. During a subsequent contingency reversal phase, aggressive behavior was substantially reduced and alternative behavior increased. Results…
