Bayer, Samuel – Language, 1996
Argues that the account of coordination of unlike categories ought to be unified with the account of feature neutralization under phonological identity. Further argues that this unified account ought not be couched in terms of string of features, but rather in terms of the logic of categories. Study concludes with a discussion of the interactions…

Wolhuter, C. C. – Comparative Education Review, 1997
Discusses the lack of classification systems as a major deficiency in the field of comparative education. Examines previous typologies of education systems and of forms of intergroup relations. Offers a tentative classification of 135 national education systems based on 15 conventional indicators using factor analysis and cluster analysis.…

Arffa, Sharon; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1989
This study sought to identify clusters or subtypes of children with learning disabilities (LD, n=24) and brain damage (BD, n=36) using a neuropsychological battery. Five clusters were determined, but no one cluster was composed exclusively of LD or BD subjects. Significant qualitative and quantitative differences between clusters were found.…

Brooks, Terrence A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1990
Describes a study in which comprehensive bibliographies and related literatures were compared by clustering indices, Bradford multipliers, bibliograph slopes, and reference scattering coefficients. It is concluded that the clustering index has the potential for being a useful tool in comparing the intensity of clustering of different literatures.…

Bergman, Lars R. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1988
When performing a classification study, it is often useful to leave a residue of unclassified entities to be analyzed separately. Using an interactional paradigm, theoretical reasoning for this approach is outlined. A procedure--RESIDAN--for conducting a classification analysis using a residue is described, and empirical data are provided. (TJH)

Breckenridge, James N. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1989
A Monte Carlo study evaluated the effectiveness of three rules of classifying objects into clusters: nearest neighbor classification; nearest centroid assignment; and quadratic discriminant analysis. Results suggest that the nearest neighbor rule is a useful tool for assessing the validity of the clustering procedure of J. H. Ward (1963). (SLD)

Barnett, George A.; Danowski, James A. – Human Communication Research, 1992
Examines the structure of the discipline of communication using the frequency of joint memberships in the International Communication Association's divisions and interest groups. Finds that the structure is more complex than previously suggested by bibliometric research. (SR)

Ulrich, Dave; McKelvey, Bill – Organization Science, 1990
Tests for and identifies populations within a family of electronics industries. Data include 669 United States and 144 Japanese electronics firms. Demonstrates the relevance of a general organizational classification for explaining how different natural selection processes affect different populations. (75 references) (MLF)

French, James C.; Powell, Allison L.; Schulman, Eric – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 2000
Discussion of quality control of data in online bibliographic databases focuses on authority files. Describes approximate string matching, introduces the concept of approximate word matching and clustering, and presents a case study using the Astrophysics Data System (ADS) that shows how to reduce human effort involved in authority work. (LRW)

Morris, Theodore Allan – Proceedings of the ASIS Annual Meeting, 2000
Examines the structure of medical informatics and the relationship between biomedicine and information science and information technology. Uses co-occurrence analysis of subject headings assigned to items indexed for MEDLINE as well as multidimensional scaling to show seven to eight broad multidisciplinary subject clusters. (Contains 28…

Hitlin, Steven; Brown, J. Scott; Elder, Glen H., Jr. – Child Development, 2006
Research on multiracial individuals is often cross-sectional, obscuring the fluid nature of multiracial self-categorization across time. Pathways of racial self-identification are developed from a nationally representative sample of adolescents aged 14-18, measured again 5 years later. A significant proportion of multiracial adolescents change…

Kim, Jee-Seon – Journal of Educational Measurement, 2006
Simulation and real data studies are used to investigate the value of modeling multiple-choice distractors on item response theory linking. Using the characteristic curve linking procedure for Bock's (1972) nominal response model presented by Kim and Hanson (2002), all-category linking (i.e., a linking based on all category characteristic curves…

Olofsson, Anna; Ohman, Susanna – Environment and Behavior, 2006
The aim of the study was to empirically test whether grouping people according to their general beliefs, combined with positional factors, can explain environmental concern, and whether there are country differences in this respect. The study is based on the United States, Canadian, Norwegian, and Swedish parts of The International Social Survey…

Kerins, Marie; Winkler, Kathleen; Sweeney, Marty; Carran, Deborah – Reading Research and Instruction, 2006
This study examined the effects of systematic instruction emphasizing phonological awareness using three groups of readers (single deficit, double deficit and no deficit) aged 6:6 to 9:3. Twenty nine subjects identified with language-based learning deficits were assigned to a group based on assessment of phonological core deficit areas. After nine…
