When comparing examinees to a control group or person, the examiner usually does not know the probability of correct classification based on the number of items used and the number of people tested. Using ranking and selection techniques, a framework is described for deriving a lower bound on this probability. (Author/JKS)

A Monte Carlo study investigated the ability of the ALSCAL multidimensional scaling program to recover true structure inherent in simulated proximity measures when data were missing. The program worked well with up to 60 percent missing data as long as sample size was large and random error was low. (Author/JKS)

A study investigated the effects of socialization experiences on the attitudinal perceptions of a sample of 333 home economics teachers regarding their work as a profession. A majority of the respondents indicated that they believed that home economics teaching is a profession. (JH)

Because it offers a means for examining the change in perception of key concepts as a result of learning, the similarity judgment task can be used to evaluate instruction effectiveness. Multidimensional scaling was used to study the comprehension of prose. Undergraduates rated the similarity of twenty nouns before and after reading passages containing those nouns. Results indicated that the scaling analysis provided an effective valid indicator of prose representation. (Author/JKS)

Guttman's mapping sentence technique is examined as a mechanism for defining domains of cognitive behavior and for generating test items to measure achievement in those domains. The utility of the mechanism as compared to alternatives is discussed. (Author/JKS)

The G index is a measure of similarity between pairs of dichotomized items. The G index is generalized here to the case where items are trichotomized. (JKS)

A problem in analysis of variance is that after rejection of the overall hypothesis, no contrasts of interest are found to be significant. A procedure for determining the contrast of significance is outlined, and the relationship between the "most significant" contrast and the overall test is shown. (Author/JKS)

A simple rationale for Scheffe's Method and Gabriel's Simultaneous Test Procedure is presented. Examples of both methods are provided. (Author)

The effect of stratified sampling of items based on item difficulty and/or interitem correlations on the estimation of test score distribution parameters using multiple matrix sampling was studied. Results indicated that stratification did not consistently improve the stability of parameter estimation. (Author/JKS)

An error is described that may occur in a posteriori testing, particularly when the original analysis of variance produces an F ratio that is just barely significant and the computer printout of the analysis does not provide the means that were used in the program. (Author/JKS)
