Clarifies the extent to which an individual's fear of success scores may vary with the presence or absence of occupational deviance and/or role overload in stimulus materials describing situations of female competitive success. Ninety-two athletes and 93 nonathletes completed the Illinois Competition Questionnaire measuring trait anxiety in competitive sports situations and the Rotter I-E scale measuring locus of control. High school students were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions to assess affective benefits of using cooperative and group goal structures on problem-solving tasks. Tests two hypotheses concerning success in debate: (1) that success would be enhanced by a fast speaking rate, large amounts of evidence, and use of jargon; and (2) that a high correlation exists among these same variables. Discusses the use of two-way radio in teaching a foreign language. Students perform a game, conducted totally in the target language, in which two teams compete in locating a hidden message.
