Considers the appropriateness of the school setting for prevention of problem behavior, using data from an alcohol education curriculum for 665 eighth-grade students. There were no significant differences between drinkers and nondrinkers in knowledge gains, indicating drinkers do not necessarily tune out school-based alcohol education. (JAC)

Studied frequency of alcohol usage in university disciplinary cases. Listed offenses in which alcohol consumption may have been a factor and reviewed individual student discipline records. Examined attitudes toward alcohol use and abuse, drinking norms, and treatment of alcoholism among a representative sample of adults (N=933). Results indicated public concern about alcohol abuse and a desire to help, definite norms maintained against heavy drinking and drunkeness, and a belief in the value of treatment demonstrated.
