Among 22 American Indian students attending a small midwestern university, 14 described experiences of verbal racism by other students and 2 reported racist comments by staff; most perceived the campus as deeply hostile to them. In 2 studies involving 125 undergraduates and 31 community college students, respectively, the construct of involvement in discourse was explored, focusing on typical academic reading and writing.
