This study assesses factors that affect principals' roles in curricular innovation. A random sample of 69 Israeli principals participated in the study, which sought to estimate the predictive ability of policy, strategy, organizational, and background factors in explaining the variance of leadership styles. Democracy is a weak and obscure ideal. It is often reasonable to defer to authority, give and take orders, and accept expertise. Pupils must learn to discuss as equals and to give and take orders as superiors and subordinates. Calling the former democratic and the latter authoritarian clarifies nothing. (SR)

Findings suggest, among others, that argumentativeness is an important variable in the perception of leadership, with the highly argumentative individual chosen leader over the moderate or mildly argumentative individual.
