During 1974-1978, a six-week senior clerkship was completed by 234 students in six WAMI (Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho) family practices. The average student saw 56 percent of diagnoses common in family practice, and performed 26 percent of common procedures. Despite wide regional variation, few differences were seen among the sites. Independent studies examined a needs v an agency perspective on home health care service needs within a rural county. Interviews with 299 elderly, aged 60-93, revealed there were substantial needs for home health care services and the desire for services varied with residence within the county. (Author)

Cost effectiveness of the program cannot be accurately determined. Assessment is based on actual self-care rather than proving poverty. A flexible approach is taken toward disability level and family support. States should keep community care flexible and available at acceptable cost. (JAC)
