Puopolo, Vito – 1970
This study investigated the feasibility of structured, programmed practice with tape-recorded materials and its effect upon the performance achievement of beginning elementary cornet and trumpet students. The main purpose of the study was to facilitate the teaching and learning in instrumental performance through the application of programmed…

MacMillan, Thomas F. – 1971
Experimental designs address themselves to two concerns: providing answers to research questions and controlling variance. The latter involves threats to internal and external validity. The threat to internal validity constitutes the greatest difficulty because of maturation, history, experimental mortality, and differential selection. Examples of…

Johnson, Frank F., Jr. – 1971
This study was designed to determine if the hours during which students participated in electronics training had any influence on their learning efficiency and their ability to function effectively as students, and to identify those factors that contributed to diminished learning efficiency. The three shifts used for the experiment were the night…

Woodley, Katheryn K. – 1972
An attempt to help college students who felt that they understood the subject matter but couldn't pass the tests was made. For purposes of this study, test-wiseness (TW) is defined as a cognitive factor, one which is measurable and subject to change either through specific test experience or training in a test-taking strategy. The specific purpose…

Goldman, Leo – Counseling Psychologist, 1978
Eventually, as the research on any one topic advances in technical sophistication, it may well become more and more trivial until finally it fades away, while researchers once again wait for the appearance of a nova. (Author)

Larsen, Jean M.; And Others – Intelligence, 1983
This study is concerned with the preschool and kindergarten phases of an ongoing longitudinal investigation of effects of preschool on educationally advantaged children. Preschool data including demographics, IQ, social competency, and school readiness are reported. Although social competency was enhanced by preschool, gains occurred for both…

Nordlund, Ola; Ronnberg, S. – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1976
Some difficulties with field experimental research designs using groups of subjects are discussed. Special attention is given to the problem of interpreting the significant results and how the obtained results can be generalized. Single-subject designs are suggested as suitable alternatives and a few such designs are presented. (Author)

Laishley, Jenny – Race, 1971
Study focuses on children aged 3 to 5 years from 3 London areas. Contrary to expectation, awareness of differences in skin color was not a simple function of age and contact with colored children and adults; no clear evidence of prejudiced thinking was found in the subjects studied. (RJ)

Intons-Peterson, M. J.; White, Alford R. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
Finke and Kurtzman report that fields of resolution increase with increases in the diameter of both perceived and imagined circular patterns. In contrast, we find no such increase for imagined circular patterns when the experimenter is not aware of the experimental predictions, even though our subjects received imagery training. Gagne, Ellen D.; Britton, Bruce K. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1982
An experiment was conducted to examine how objectives influence organization of information recalled from text. Objectives were hypothesized to affect sequence of attention, rehearsal during a review period, and to serve as retrieval cues. Results indicated that organization by objectives occurs during rehearsal but not encoding or retrieval…

Goldstein, E. Bruce; Fink, Susan I. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1981
Four experiments show that observers can selectively attend to one of two stationary superimposed pictures. Selective recognition occurred with large displays in which observers were free to make eye movements during a 3-sec exposure and with small displays in which observers were instructed to fixate steadily on a point.
