Interviews with a random sample of 270 students and a selected sample of 52 key informants showed students were more willing to use self-help groups than key informants predicted. Examination of 31 therapeutic wilderness programs specializing in mental health treatment revealed that most programs served high-risk youth using a variety of outdoor modalities; that there was not a consensus on the definition of therapeutic; and that, in most cases, nonprofessional staff were responsible for therapeutic interventions. Reports findings on factors associated with children who terminate psychotherapy prematurely. From a sample of 45 children with an average age of 13.5 years, it was found that children are more likely to remain in treatment if the therapist is perceived as professional and caring, and if the treatment plan is adequately explained.
