This program at New York School for the Deaf serves students of average intelligence and slow reading ability between ages 15 and 21. The program gives students both the expertise available in a school for the handicapped and a practical education combined with a mainstreamed vocational setting and appropriate career guidance. A workshop was designed to introduce experiences with chemistry at a level appropriate to elementary school teachers with little/no background in chemistry and presented so teachers learned to do hands-on experiments appropriate for their students. The National Project on Career Education is a collaborative program of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf at Gallaudet College and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID).
