Ramsay, J. O. – Psychometrika, 1982
Data are often a continuous function of a variable such as time observed over some interval. One or more such functions might be observed for each subject. The extension of classical data analytic techniques to such functions is discussed. (Author/JKS)

Riccia, Giacomo Della; Shapiro, Alexander – Psychometrika, 1982
Some mathematical aspects of minimum trace factor analysis (MTFA) are discussed. The uniqueness of an optimal point of MTFA is proved, and necessary and sufficient conditions for any particular point to be optimal are given. The connection between MTFA and classical minimum rank factor analysis is discussed. (Author/JKS)

Wilcox, Rand R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
When comparing k normal populations an investigator might want to know the probability that the population with the largest population mean will have the largest sample mean. This paper describes and illustrates methods of approximating this probability when the variances are unknown and possibly unequal. (Author/BW)

Verhelst, N. D. – Psychometrika, 1981
A method for the least squares regression of one squared variable on a second squared variable when the relationship between the original variables is linear is given. The problem arises in multidimensional scaling algorithms. (Author/JKS)

Olkin, Ingram – Psychometrika, 1981
It is known that for trivariate distributions, if two correlations are fixed, the remaining correlation is constrained. If just one is fixed, the remaining two are constrained. Both results are extended to the case of a multivariate distribution. (Author/JKS)

Bisbee, Kolak K.; Hawkins, Harry M. – Industrial Education, 1982
Presents a microcomputer program (designed for Apple II but it can be modified) used to calculate various dimensions relative to a spur gear. Basic terms are identified and a program listing for gear calculations is included. (CT)

Mendoza, Jorge L. – Psychometrika, 1980
The paper obtains a maximum likelihood criterion test for multisample sphericity. The test contains Mauchly's sphericity test as a special case. (Author)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing
Harnack, William J. – Humanist, 1981
Considers the dichotomy between the cosmic perspective and the creationist view. Presents an overview of various current explanations of the origin and nature of the universe, including scientific explanations, fundamentalist beliefs, and creation myths from other cultures. The article is based on comments made by Carl Sagan at the American…
