Peer reviewedTanaka, Yutaka; Odaka, Yoshimasa – Psychometrika, 1989
A method is proposed for detecting influential observations in iterative principal factor analysis. Theoretical influence functions are derived for two components of the common variance decomposition. The major mathematical tool is the influence function derived by Tanaka (1988). (SLD)

Peer reviewedWhite, David B.; Hood, Albert B. – Journal of College Student Development, 1989
Used seven instruments to assess significant aspects of Chickering's theory of student development in college students (N=255). Found that a factor analysis of subscale scores provided only limited evidence to support Chickering's theory. (Author/ABL)

Peer reviewedSiegert, Richard J.; And Others – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1988
A study concluding that the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (Revised) (WAIS-R) has three clear factors in its structure is critiqued. An alternative factor comparison technique, FACTOREP, is used with identical data. It is demonstrated that the WAIS-R has only two strong factors--verbal comprehension and perceptual organization. (TJH)

Peer reviewedTisak, John; Meredith, William – Psychometrika, 1989
A longitudinal factor analysis model that is entirely exploratory is proposed for use with multiple populations. Factorial collapse, period/practice effects, and an invariant and/or stationary factor pattern are allowed. The model is formulated stochastically and implemented via a stage-wise EM algorithm. (TJH)

Peer reviewedten Berge, Jos M. F.; Kiers, Henk A. L. – Psychometrika, 1989
The DEDICOM (decomposition into directional components) model provides a framework for analyzing square but asymmetric matrices of directional relationships among "n" objects or persons in terms of a small number of components. One version of DEDICOM ignores the diagonal entries of the matrices. A straightforward computational solution…

Atkinson, Leslie; Cyr, J. J. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1988
Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised subtests, as administered to 204 adults with low IQs, were factor analyzed. Solutions proved comparable to structures extracted from the normative data and to solutions based on other standardized tests for persons with low IQs. (Author)

Peer reviewedSinha, Atanu R.; Buchanan, Bruce S. – Psychometrika, 1995
This paper presents an analysis of the stability of principal components. Stability is measured by the expectation of the absolute inner product of the sample principal component with the corresponding population component. The usefulness and predictive validity of the model were supported through simulation. (SLD)

Peer reviewedSchaie, K. Warner – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1992
Delineates how changes in research methodology have impacted field of gerontology over past three decades. Illustrates impact of methodological changes on gerontology by discussing example of age-cohort-period problem as an innovation in research design. Examines case of confirmatory factor analysis as an illustration of how methodological…

Peer reviewedDunlap, William P.; Cornwell, John M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1994
The fundamental problems that ipsative measures impose for factor analysis are shown analytically. Normative and ipsative correlation matrices are used to show that the factor pattern induced by ipsativity will overwhelm any factor structure seen with normative factor analysis, making factor analysis not interpretable. (SLD)

Peer reviewedten Berge, Jos M. F.; Zegers, Frits E. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1990
Arguments by J. Levin (1988) challenging the convergence properties of the Harman and Jones (1966) method of Minres factor analysis are shown to be invalid. Claims about the invalidity of a rank-one version of the Harman and Jones method are also refuted. (TJH)

Peer reviewedMieczkowski, Tammy A.; And Others – Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 1993
Analyzed Suicide Intent Scale using data from 98 psychiatric inpatients who had attempted suicide. Analysis resulted in two-factor solution: Lethal Intent factor contained items pertaining to subjective level of lethal intent; Planning factor contained items related to objective planning for attempt. Findings suggest that Suicide Intent Scale can…

Peer reviewedFeldman, Lisa A. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1993
The hypothesis that anxiety and depression self-report scales tap distinct constructs was tested using confirmatory factor analysis on mood data from nonclinical samples. Results provide evidence that anxiety and depression self-report scales do not measure discriminant mood constructs and may, therefore, be better thought of as measures of…

Peer reviewedCraighead, W. Edward; Smucker, Mervin R.; Wilcoxon Craighead, Linda; Ilardi, Stephen S. – Psychological Assessment, 1998
The factor structure of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) (M. Kovacs, 1992) was evaluated in a community sample of 1777 children and 924 adolescents. There were five first-order factors for the child group, and the same five plus one more for the adolescents. Results support the stability and predictability of the obtained factor…

Peer reviewedChung, Y. Barry; Harmon, Lenore W. – Journal of Career Assessment, 1999
The reliability and validity of the Perceived Occupational Opportunity Scale and Perceived Occupational Discrimination Scale were tested with 231 black undergraduates. Additional support was obtained using data from 105 black and 72 white high school students. (SK)

Peer reviewedKiers, Henk A. L. – Psychometrika, 1997
Five techniques that combine the ideals of rotation of matrices of factor loadings to optimal agreement and rotation to simple structure are compared on the basis of empirical and contrived data. Combining a generalized Procrustes analysis with Varimax on the main of the matched loading matrices performed well on all criteria. (SLD)
