Peer reviewedJoelson, John M.; Herrmann, Douglas J. – American Journal of Psychology, 1978
Properties of categories were investigated by analyzing 22 measures of the 56 categories used in the 1969 Battig and Montague norms. A factor analysis of the data indicated that categories in semantic memory possess at least four factors (category familiarity, category size, category-label printed frequency, semantic complexity) that may affect…

Peer reviewedYoung, Forrest W.; And Others – Psychometrika, 1978
Principal components analysis is generalized to the case where any of the variables under consideration can be nominal, ordinal or interval. Hotelling's original formulation is seen to be a special case of this generalization. (JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Matrices
Peer reviewedHarris, Chester W. – Psychometrika, 1978
A simple roof is presented: that the squared multiple correlation of a variable with the remaining variables in the set of variables is a lower bound to the communality of that variable. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Data Analysis, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedShubsachs, Alexander P. W.; And Others – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1978
The factor structure of 109 Occupational Reinforcer Patterns approximating the distribution of the employed labor force of the United States is investigated. These work-reinforcer systems were found to be best represented by a three-factor solution: A Self Reinforcement factor, and Environmental/Organizational reinforcement factor, and a…

Peer reviewedMeredith, William – Psychometrika, 1977
A group of factor analytic rotation procedures are developed which yield both hyperplane fittings and oblique Procrustean analyses as special cases. It is generally supposed that these techniques are rather different in approach. Illustrations are presented and discussed. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Matrices, Oblique Rotation
Tittle, Carol Kehr; And Others – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1978
Scale scores of KOIS profiles of 202 reentry women were converted to within individual form by means of a z-score transformation. Seven factors emerged on the female-normed scales and 11 factors on the male-normed scales. Four factors were similar in both norm sets and two showed some overlap. (Author)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Females, Interest Inventories, Reentry Workers
Peer reviewedSchoon, Craig G. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1978
The structure of interests can be conceived of as a structure of occupational stimuli embedded within the matrix of affective responses which they produce. Three dimensions of affect are used as the axes of a semantic space within which the occupational stimuli are located according to their unique affective meaning. (Author)
Descriptors: Affective Measures, Factor Analysis, Interest Inventories, Research Projects
Peer reviewedLittle, Craig B. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1977
Presents a study of the identification of distinct dimensions within Rotter's Internal-External Control Scale. Five hundred college seniors served as subjects. (BD)
Descriptors: College Students, Factor Analysis, Personality Measures, Research
Peer reviewedVelicer, Wayne F.; Fava, Joseph L. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1987
Principal component analysis, image component analysis, and maximum likelihood factor analysis were compared to assess the effects of variable sampling. Results with respect to degree of saturation and average number of variables per factor were clear and dramatic. Differential effects on boundary cases and nonconvergence problems were also found.…
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Matrices
Peer reviewedSepich, Robert T. – Journal of Career Development, 1987
Reviews the literature to enhance practitioner understanding of career indecision. Attempts to answer two questions: (1) What are correlates of career indecision? and (2) How is it measured? Summarizes findings; suggests research areas. (CH)
Descriptors: Career Choice, Decision Making, Factor Analysis, Intervention
Peer reviewedIsraels, Abby Z. – Psychometrika, 1984
Redundancy analysis (also called principal components analysis of instrumental variables) is generalized to qualitative variables; it then gives implicitly a simultaneous "optimal" scaling of the dependent, qualitative variables. Examples are taken from the Dutch Life Situation Survey 1977. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Adults, Correlation, Factor Analysis, Life Satisfaction
Peer reviewedHocevar, Dennis; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate a potential difficulty with relying on null models in LISREL confirmatory factor analytic measurement models and to offer several suggestions for dealing with this concern. Using randomly generated factors in a matrix of 46 aptitude tests, it was shown that this approach is unlikely to reject even…

Peer reviewedBrown, Michael T.; Duren, Paula S. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1988
Employed confirmatory and exploratory factor analytic methods to test the hypothesis that Spielberger's revised four-factor model of anxiety was valid for characterizing the anxiety of Blacks. Administered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory to 182 Black adults. Confirmed the state-trait assertion, but not the four-factor model of anxiety-present…

Peer reviewedPaunonen, Sampo V. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1987
Study determines that solutions derived by multiple group analysis and item-total correlation analysis were generally most interpretable from a psychological perspective. It was concluded that their application to test construction is preferred over Procrustean or confirmatory maximum likelihood approaches. (RB)
Descriptors: Correlation, Data Analysis, Factor Analysis, Psychological Testing
Peer reviewedMarsh, Herbert W. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1987
Study examined the factorial invariance of responses by preadolescent males and females to a multidimensional self-concept instrument. Also demonstrated how confirmatory factor analysis is used to test factorial invariance and examined problems with its use and interpretation. (RB)
