The Venice-Lincoln Technical Center, Venice, Illinois, is housed in former public school facilities and offers a variety of adult education and job training classes. State agencies' involvement and enabling legislation concerned with program implementation, development, and funding are discussed. (LH)

Outlined in this article are efforts and strategies undertaken by the New York Chinatown Planning Council to meet the needs of the Chinese community in New York City. Chautauqua Institution, a 105-year-old educational venture that was one of the U.S.'s first successful attempts at mass adult education, offers summer theme-oriented lecture programs, college courses, religious lecture series, opera, symphonies, and plays. Instruction in self-examination for early detection of orofacial cancer was given to more than 450 persons at the Erie County (New York) Fair to familiarize the public with the technique. Results of followup studies of participants and program experience suggest that it is feasible to implement the instruction on a large scale. (MF)

This paper is a case study of newspaper mathematics courses developed by SACHED TRUST and published as part of a broader newspaper project in South Africa between 1977 and 1980. Findings are presented, culminating in some recommendations for the future use of the newspaper for motivating adults to study mathematics. (Author/PK)

Group homes and foster homes (N=436) rated the frequency with which their severely retarded residents engaged in 20 leisure activities. Group home residents engaged in 60% of the activities more often than foster home residents, although some leisure activities appeared to be generic across different living and community situations. The autumn conference of the Vermont Council on the Humanities focused on discussions about Allan Bloom's book, "The Closing of the American Mind," and his call for Americans to return to fundamental questions of the nature of man and society.
