Describes the telephone survey conducted by Gulf Coast Community College in response to a decline in spring registrants. Using a computer-generated list of potential nonreturning students, college faculty and officials telephoned to determine if and why the student would not be returning and to offer appropriate referrals. While legal action to collect defaulted student loans is required, an equally important aspect of the student loan dilemma is to identify ways institutions can reduce the rate of future defaults.
