Hill, David – Teacher Magazine, 1997
Asthma is at near-epidemic proportions among poor urban children, but in Baltimore, a school-based health program is providing relief. The six-week program teaches children how to manage their disease, which in turn reduces absenteeism and decreases emergency room visits. Informal assessment indicates the program is fairly effective. (SM)

Peer reviewedBooks, Sue – Educational Foundations, 1997
This paper argues that rural poverty remains relatively invisible because, although shameful, it is profitable, and the rural poor pose little threat to their suburban neighbors. This is illustrated via interrogation concerning a rural poultry plant fire. The paper examines implications of this case for foundations scholars and educational…

Peer reviewedRoberts, Richard N. – Journal of Early Intervention, 2002
This article comments on a study that found children (ages 0-3) who were disadvantaged, from minority groups, or without health insurance were 2 to 30 times more likely to have unmet health care needs. The "medical home" philosophy is discussed, in which medical care is accessible, comprehensive, and family centered. (Contains 8 references.) (CR)

Peer reviewedMcKee, Nancy P. – Urban Education, 1989
Studies the role of education and its effect on the economic well-being of Mexican Americans in the border city of Laredo (Texas). Peer reviewedBurby, Raymond J.; Rohe, William M. – Urban Affairs Quarterly, 1989
Research based on data from comparative study of eight public housing developments. Findings illustrate that deconcentration of public housing provides some benefits for low-income, single-parent households. Results tend to support claims of both proponents and opponents of deconcentration. Implications for management of public housing are…

Peer reviewedZigler, Edward – NAMTA Journal, 1994
Discusses successes and problems of Head Start. Suggests that Head Start's difficulties relate to its implementation, not its design. Proposes increasing the effectiveness of Head Start through a series of reform strategies that relate to interventions that address the needs of children in child care, preschool children, and school-age children.…

Peer reviewedDewees, Anthony; Klees, Steven J. – Comparative Education Review, 1995
Discusses the problems faced by street and working children in Brazil, problems often exacerbated by the educational system. Cook, Jimmie – Teaching Pre K-8, 1994
Argues that the quality of life for many preschoolers from disadvantaged backgrounds has not changed appreciably since the 19th century and that more must be done by school districts to implement effective preschool programs for all children. Peer reviewedBrown, Frank – Education and Urban Society, 1995
Explores the theories and concepts of privatizing public school services. It is argued that education is a required service for all children, and, unlike business and industry, private education providers cannot fire their unwanted clients, i.e., poor-performing students, parents, or teachers. The issue of efficiency vs effectiveness is addressed…

Peer reviewedToji, Dean S.; Johnson, James H. – Amerasia Journal, 1992
Assesses the incidence of Asian-American and Pacific Islander-American poverty, and offers a theoretical explanation for its existence. It is argued that poverty of Americans of Asian and Pacific Island descent is best understood in the context of the linkage of labor migration and U.S. labor market segmentation. (SLD)

Peer reviewedHogue, Carol J. Rowland; Hargraves, Martha A. – American Journal of Public Health, 1993
Examines the Swedish experience for lessons to help reduce infant mortality in the United States.
