Widaman, Keith F. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1993
Across conditions, differences between population parameters defined by common factor analysis and component analysis are demonstrated. Implications for data analytic and theoretical issues related to choice of analytic model are discussed. Results suggest that principal components analysis should not be used to obtain parameters reflecting latent…

Byrne, Barbara M.; Baron, Pierre – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1993
Examined 3 independent samples of high school adolescents (12-18 years of age). Used exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses to test and cross-validate factor structure of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Findings suggest that, when used with normal adolescents, BDI is most adequately defined by three-factor, hierarchical structure of…

Schipull, Douglas W.; Reeves, Carolyn K.; Kazelskis, Richard – Research in the Schools, 1995
Ten dimensions of teacher concern were identified through a factor analysis of 568 inservice teachers' responses to the Teacher Concerns Checklist. Studies of test-retest and alpha coefficient reliability and concurrent validity of these dimensions supported their use in research on teacher concerns. (SLD)

Bowen, Craig W. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1999
Reports the development and score validation of an instrument for measuring anxieties students experience in college chemistry laboratories. Factor analysis of scores from 361 college students shows that the developed Chemistry Laboratory Anxiety Instrument measures five constructs. Results from a second sample of 598 students show that scores on…

Passarello, Deirdre J.; Hintze, John M.; Owen, Steven V.; Gable, Robert K. – Psychology in the Schools, 1999
Explores the factor structure of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Survey, a parent rating scale designed for use in the assessment of child and adolescent anxiety. Surveys (N=176) from parents of children in kindergarten through grade 11 were utilized. Factor analysis suggests that one second-order factor yields an internal consistency estimate of…

Corcoran, Kevin J.; Michels, Jennifer L. – Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse, 1999
Examines cognitive-personality and situational factors which contribute to the decision to consume alcohol in a mixed sex interaction among college students. Reports that men were more likely to choose alcohol, as were those with positive alcohol expectancies and those who perceived their partner as anxious. Typical alcohol consumption and fear of…

Pyryt, Michael C. – Gifted Child Quarterly, 2000
This article illustrates the usefulness of higher order factor analysis in demonstrating the presence of general intelligence as the factor underlying performance on 13 indicators of four identified multiple intelligences. Data are reanalyzed using maximum likelihood extraction with oblique rotation and indicate a general intelligence factor…

Plucker, Jonathan A. – Gifted Child Quarterly, 2000
This article responds to a previous article that illustrated the usefulness of higher order factor analysis in demonstrating the presence of general intelligence as the factor underlying performance on 13 indicators of four identified multiple intelligences. Conceptual areas of difference and agreement are delineated. (Contains ten references.)…

Christoph, Richard T.; Schoenfeld, Gerald A., Jr.; Tansky, Judith W. – Human Resource Development Quarterly, 1998
College students (n=164) who received multimedia instruction were compared with 231 controls. Higher levels of both existing self-efficacy about multimedia use and self-efficacy developed through training were significantly related to perceptions that multimedia instruction is more effective. (SK)

Hagtvet, Knut A. – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1998
Demonstrates how perspectives from covariance structural modeling and generalizability theory can be combined for a comprehensive assessment of latent constructs. This approach to examining variance components is illustrated by one- and two- facet designs, and can be extended to more complex designs. (MAK)

Goodman, Marianne; Hull, James W.; Terkelsen, Kenneth G.; Smith, Thomas E.; Anthony, Donna – Evaluation and Program Planning, 1997
This study of 67 chronically mentally ill outpatients examined subjective Quality of Life Scores from A. Lehman's Quality of Life Interview. Results suggest a model of life satisfaction in which instrumental and affiliative needs comprise significant portions of life satisfaction. Implications for other quality of life and life satisfaction…

Johnson, William L.; Johnson, Annabel M.; Murphy, Stanley D.; Weiss, Ardith; Zimmerman, Kurt J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1998
This study examined the factor structure of Form G of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (K. Briggs and I. Myers, 1987). A third-order component analysis of a sample of 486 college students yielded three higher-order components. These findings contribute to the literature pertaining to the generalized structure of the instrument. (SLD)

Holton, Elwood F., III; Bates, Reid A.; Noe, Raymond A.; Ruona, Wendy E. A. – Human Resource Development Quarterly, 2000
Holton, Bates, and Ruona report that factor analysis of data from the Learning Transfer System Inventory for 1,616 trainees identified climate, job utility, and rewards as most important influences on transfer of learning. Noe's reaction critiques the research. (Contains 73 references.) (SK)

Bracken, Bruce A.; Bunch, Sherry; Keith, Timothy Z.; Keith, Patricia B. – Psychology in the Schools, 2000
Investigates the factor structure of five self-concept scales from a hierarchical, multidimensional theoretical model. The scales were administered to 221 students in grades 5 through 8. Each scale yielded strong general factors and six dominant factors that coincide with the proposed theoretical model, which reflects social, affect, competence,…

Raines-Eudy, Ruth – Structural Equation Modeling, 2000
Demonstrates empirically a structural equation modeling technique for group comparison of reliability and validity. Data, which are from a study of 495 mothers' attitudes toward pregnancy, have a one-factor measurement model and three sets of subpopulation comparisons. (SLD)
