Wang, Z. W.; Willoughby, T. L. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1991
This paper describes a method of understanding student problem-solving behavior during computer-assisted instruction using trigonometry as the example domain. Instead of attempting to model the student's process for solving problems, techniques which infer the equivalence between two adjacent steps in the student's process are used to determine…

Bracken, Bruce A.; And Others – School Psychology Review, 1991
Ipsative subtest pattern stability was examined for 60 preschool children (31 males and 29 females) on the Bracken Basic Concept Scale and the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children over a 4-6 week test-retest interval. The moderate level of profile stability found warrants cautious use of the ipsative interpretation approach. (SLD)

McGrew, Kevin S.; Keith, Timothy Z.; Flanagan, Dawn P.; Vanderwood, Mike – School Psychology Review, 1997
Describes recent developments in intelligence theory, applied measurements, and research methodology that suggests new research is needed to reexamine the relative importance of both general and specific cognitive abilities in explaining school achievement. Presents summary of results that examines relationship between "g" and seven…

Sisto, Fermino Fernandes – Child Study Journal, 2000
Examined validity of use of human figure drawing to evaluate cognitive development status using Piagetian tasks with 7- to 11-year-olds. Found that scores for children's drawings of a man and a woman correlated significantly with mental imaging, conservation of mass, and conservation of length, suggesting the possibility of finding patterns to…

Liss, Miriam; Fein, Deborah; Bullard, Sarah; Robins, Diana – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2000
A study involving 18 individuals with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) (ages 9-21) and 67 controls found total score on the Biber Cognitive Estimation Test for both individuals with PDD and controls progressed consistently with mental age, development being the most dramatic around the mental age of 8 years. Snodgrass, Michael; Shevrin, Howard – Cognition, 2006
Although the veridicality of unconscious perception is increasingly accepted, core issues remain unresolved [Jack, A., & Shallice, T. (2001). Introspective physicalism as an approach to the science of consciousness. "Cognition, 79," 161-196], and sharp disagreement persists regarding fundamental methodological and theoretical issues. Piatt, Andrea L.; Fields, Julie A.; Paolo, Anthony M.; Troster, Alexander I. – Brain and Language, 2004
An emerging body of literature points to the prominent role of the frontal lobes in the retrieval of verbs, whereas production of common and proper nouns arguably is mediated primarily by posterior and anterior temporal regions, respectively. Although the majority of studies examining the neuroanatomic distinctions between verb and noun retrieval…

Lent, Robert W.; Brown, Steven D. – Journal of Career Assessment, 2006
Efforts to test hypotheses derived from social cognitive theory require sound measures of the theory's constructs. Because the theory is concerned with domain-specific aspects of human functioning, it raises special measurement challenges. For example, unlike traits, which can be indexed with general, all-purpose measures, social cognitive…

Spencer, Fiona H.; Bornholt, Laurel J. – Australian Journal of Educational & Developmental Psychology, 2005
This project examined some of the common constraints on reliable cognitive assessment for children over time. Repeated measures design (n = 133) was with younger (5 & 6 year old, n = 64) and older (7 & 8 year old, n = 69) children. Results showed that children's self-concepts moderated the test-retest reliability over extended intervals…

Vogel, Edward K.; Woodman, Geoffrey F.; Luck, Steven J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2006
How long does it take to form a durable representation in visual working memory? Several theorists have proposed that this consolidation process is very slow. Here, we measured the time course of consolidation. Observers performed a change-detection task for colored squares, and shortly after the presentation of the first array, pattern masks were…

Ureyen, Mehmet – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
In this study, the effect of different definitions of concavity on students' understanding was investigated. Students enrolled in the calculus-II course in the science and engineering faculties in Anadolu University, Turkey were divided into two groups and each group was given a different definition of concavity. At the end of the study, both…

Okoro, Daniel; Miller, Larry E. – 1994
A study determined the learning (achievement) of 151 participants in the 1992-93 Ohio pesticide applicator training (PAT) program. It assessed the intended level of cognition of instruction and the actual cognition level achieved by the participants. All participants were pre- and posttested using questions adapted from Hall and Prochaska (1991),…

Timm, Joan Thrower; Gross, James R. – 1990
Previous investigations on Piagetian cognitive levels among college students both within and across academic disciplines have not addressed the issue of possible differences in cognitive levels between traditional undergraduates and older returning students. Piagetian cognitive levels were studied among traditional- and nontraditional-age college…

Lipsky, Sally A. – 1983
The Information Acquisition Preference Inventory was used to examine cognitive styles in relationship to students' use of study tasks and to assess subjects' preferred ways of learning and problem solving. The inventory, which has students rank words describing their own learning behavior, identifies four distinctive learning preference modes:…

Bayuk, Milla – 1983
The need for cognitive style mapping and student grouping in order to enhance learning and retention in foreign language instruction is examined. The four components of classical audio-lingual language instruction, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, are discussed. Different learning modalities are considered, including visual, auditory,…
