The selection of textbooks used in content analysis to determine values taught to students is important. Only widely used texts must be analyzed. The samples of U.S. history texts used by Fitzgerald (1979) and Barth and Shermis (1980) in their studies were not representative of textbooks used in schools. (RM)

Analysis of third-grade books in the New Macmillan Reading Program reveals that the books exceeded the publisher's designation of readability and did not progress in difficulty from easy to more difficult. All available 1970-71 higher education collective bargaining contracts (46) and a 20-percent sample of 1979-80 contracts (88) were examined using key word and context analysis to identify significant concepts. Examines the portrayal of intimate sexual behavior on soap operas and concludes that soap operas have more sexual content than do prime-time programs, but the types of intimacies differ.
