Graduate Research Forum Review 2025 -- A Network of Works: Unpacking Composer Diversity in Secondary Ensemble Repertoire
Lisa M. Heinrich
Contributions to Music Education, v50 p197-201 2025
Dr. Cory Meals, Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of Houston, was the 2025 featured presenter for the Graduate Research Forum at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference. Dr. Meals presented two studies highlighting composer diversity in secondary ensemble lists. Analyses revealed an overabundance of White male composers, very few women, and a small number of Black, Brown, Indigenous, or Asian (BBIA) composers across lists. Students can learn standard repertoire but also need to see themselves reflected in the ensemble setting. In order for students to feel connected to the music they are performing, music educators need to provide students access to music from composers with diverse backgrounds and identities.
