Curating African Art for Children Using a Postcolonial, Digital Approach to Exhibition Design
Journal of Museum Education, v50 n2 p197-209 2025
This case study explores and evaluates how an interactive exhibition in South Africa introduces children aged 11-15 to African art through a postcolonial and digital approach. By connecting traditional and contemporary artworks, the exhibition illustrates the evolving nature of African art and its relevance in global cultural discourse. Contextual integrity, interactivity, and inclusivity guide the design, combining traditional and digital elements to foster meaningful engagement with cultural artifacts. The use of authentic African voices in narratives ensures respectful representation and dismantles colonial stereotypes. Through this integrative approach, children actively engage with African art as a dynamic cultural expression, fostering deeper understanding and respect for its social and historical significance. This model emphasizes the potential of innovative curation to challenge conventional narratives and enrich educational experiences.
