Mansur, Ovad – Information Processing and Management, 1980
Formulates a model to accommodate the hypothesis that, if the content representation items of documents in a database are neither totally independent nor highly correlated, combining them in a certain way may increase information retrieval effectiveness. The results of a small experiment that tested this hypothesis are presented. (Author/JD)

O'Connor, John – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1980
Describes an experiment in passage retrieval for scientists using a variety of forms of retrieval question and search words selected independently by two different people. (FM)

Schrock, Kathleen – Technology Connection, 1997
The number of hits on Internet keyword searches can be limited by following some tips and tricks to using search engines efficiently. Recommends being specific, checking relevancy, using multiple search engines, and using directories. Includes a bibliography of search engines, directories, and print and Internet articles. (PEN)

Leazer, Gregory H.; Furner, Jonathan; Napper, Rachel – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2003
Describes the use of three alternative methods for ranking films for information retrieval (IR). A large film-person incidence matrix is generated using the principle cast, directors, producers and screenwriters for each film. These attributes are used to measure film-film distances by creating a distance matrix. Distance, product distance, and…

Tang, Rong; Ng, K. B.; Strzalkowski, Tomek; Kantor, Paul B. – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2003
Reports preliminary results of a study to develop and automate new metrics for assessment of information quality in text documents, particularly in news. Through focus group studies, quality judgment experiments, and textual feature extraction and analysis, nine quality aspects were generated and applied in human assessments. Experiments were…

Ng, Kwong Bor; Kantor, Paul; Tang, Rong; Rittman, Robert; Small, Sharon; Song, Peng; Strzalkowski, Tomek; Sun, Ying; Wacholder, Nina – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2003
Textual properties of documents were analyzed to identify predictive variables for various document qualities by means of statistical and linguistic methods. A collection of 1000 documents was created, and each document was judged in terms of nine document qualities (accuracy, reliability, objectivity, depth, author/producer credibility,…

Persin, Michael; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1996
Discusses ranking techniques for document retrieval and proposes an evaluation, or filtering, technique that reduces costs and memory usage by early recognition of which documents are likely to be highly ranked. Highlights include index design, ranked query evaluation, reducing the number of accumulators, inverted file structures, and experimental…

Kang, Hyun-Kyu; Choi, Key-Sun – Information Processing & Management, 1997
Discussion of information retrieval and relevance focuses on mutual information, a measure which represents the relation between two words. A model of a natural-language information-retrieval system that is based on a two-level document-ranking method using mutual information is presented, and a Korean encyclopedia test collection is explained.…

Blake, Catherine; Pratt, Wanda – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2002
Discusses the growth in the quantity of scientific literature and advances in information retrieval techniques to find relevant articles. Explores user behavior and information requirements of scientists as they interact with medical literature to answer research questions and introduces METIS (Multi-user extraction and information synthesis) to…

Lorence, Daniel P.; Spink, Amanda – Information Processing & Management, 2003
Reports results from a national study into the perceived variation reported by health information managers related to the relevance-efficiency trade-offs of information classification across regions and practice settings. Findings suggest that due to major regional variation, stringent national information standards may be counterproductive for…

Fuhr, Norbert – Information Processing and Management, 1989
Describes three models for probabilistic indexing, all based on the Darmstadt automatic indexing approach, and presents experimental evaluation results for each. The discussion covers the improved retrieval effectiveness of probabilistic indexing over binary indexing, and suggestions for using this automatic indexing method with free text terms.…

Gauch, Susan; Smith, John B. – Information Processing and Management, 1989
Describes a project that is developing an intelligent search intermediary to help users locate relevant passages in large full text databases. (The system automatically reformulates Boolean queries to improve search results and presents retrieved passages in decreasing order of estimated relevance.) The current status of the project and plans for…

Srinivasan, Padmini – Information Processing and Management, 1989
Describes rough sets theory and discusses the advantages it offers for information retrieval, including the implicit inclusion of Boolean logic, term weighting, ranked retrieval output, and relevance feedback. Rough set formalism is compared to Boolean, vector, and fuzzy models of information retrieval and a small scale evaluation of rough sets is…

Eisenberg, Michael; Barry, Carol – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1988
Describes a study that examined the effect of the order of document presentation on the relevance scores assigned to documents, and the effect of the rating scale used (category rating or magnitude estimation) on order effects. Areas which need further investigation are identified. (13 references) (CLB)

Pritchard-Schoch, Teresa – Online, 1995
Compares two natural language processing search engines, WIN (WESTLAW Is Natural) and FREESTYLE, developed by LEXIS. Legal issues in natural language queries were presented to identical libraries in both systems. Results showed that the editorials enhanced relevance; a search would be more thorough using both databases; and if only one system were…
