Gardner, Howard – Educational Leadership, 1997
It is difficult to grasp multiple-intelligences theory and implement its implications effectively. MI is not a quick fix. However, educators who thoughtfully use the theory to support their larger educational goals find it a worthy partner in school improvement. The author praises the efforts of several researchers and practitioners in this…

Sternberg, Robert J. – NASSP Bulletin, 1998
A large-scale study identified 199 high school students as gifted analytically, creatively, and/or practically and enrolled them in a summer class in psychology. Students receiving instruction that better matched their ability patterns outperformed those who received nonmatching instruction. Identifying students for creative and practical…

Berger, Peter N. – Teaching and Learning Literature with Children and Young Adults, 1997
Muses about Howard Gardner's theory of "multiple intelligences." Finds that, although learning should be defined broadly enough so that everyone can succeed at it, Gardner's theory does not teach educators much about talent that was not already known through common experience. (PA)

Cambra, Cristina – American Annals of the Deaf, 1996
University students (N=222) evaluated personality descriptors as applied to people with deafness, blindness, or no sensory disability. Two general stereotypes of the deaf emerged: that of general nonsociability and that of limited intelligence. However, students who already knew a deaf person assigned the deaf more positive personality…

Donders, Jacques – Psychological Assessment, 1996
Representative profile subtypes were examined in the standardization sample (2200 children) of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III). Two-stage cluster analysis identified five reliable subtypes. A method for determining the relative uniqueness of clinically obtained WISC-III factor index score patterns is…

Keogh, Barbara K.; And Others – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1997
Cognitive and family data on 82 children with developmental delays were collected in an eight-year longitudinal study. Examination of change scores (at ages 3, 6, and 11) identified increasing, stable, and decreasing patterns of change. There were significant correlations between change in intelligence quotient, entering developmental quotient,…

Abbott, John – Educational Leadership, 1997
Archaeology and cultural anthropology show that humans developed many discrete skills (social, technological, natural history, and language intelligence) over the past million years, but only recently have combined these into "broad" intelligence. Understanding learning is a key issue. Metacognition, the ability to consider one's…

Poole, Carolyn R. – Educational Leadership, 1997
When children feel threatened by environmental factors (abuse, poverty, malnourishment, family violence, or the traditional schooling system), they downshift their thinking and limit their behavior choices. To think critically, children must feel safe to take risks. They learn best when immersed in complex experiences and when allowed to process…

Roper, Bill; Davis, David – Research in Drama Education, 2000
Notes that Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) has afforded support to educators and parents who want to see their children as equals no matter in what area of ability they develop competence. Explains the usefulness of Gardner's approach, based on Kantian notions of the power of mind to give order to the world. Discusses the…

Achter, John A.; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1996
Used the theory of work adjustment as a conceptual framework in evaluating multipotentiality, taken from the psychological literature on counseling intellectually gifted individuals. An examination of over 1,000 gifted students, assessed with the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the Study of Values, and J. L. Holland's 6 interest themes revealed little…

Rusch, Frank R.; And Others – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1997
A random sample of 197 supported employees with mental retardation was examined in a longitudinal study. Results indicate that intelligence, time spent in the job, prior earnings, and federal job subsidy predicted future earnings. Job placement, job type, and means of transportation had little influence on earnings. (Author/CR)

Genetic and environmental influences on academic achievement were studied for 314 pairs of white full siblings and 53 pairs of half siblings and 161 pairs of black full siblings and 106 half-sibling pairs (National Longitudinal Survey of Youth). Achter, John A.; And Others – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1997
This paper critically reviews the concept of multipotentiality as it is applied in the literature on gifted children. Findings from a study of 1,000 gifted students are cited; above-level assessment of abilities and preferences revealed markedly differentiated profiles for 95% of students studied, suggesting that the term…
