Peer reviewedBednersh, Florene; Peck, Charles E. – Child Study Journal, 1986
Contrasts effects of developmental characteristics of peer interaction partners on three preadolescent students with severe developmental disabilities observed while playing with (1) children of similar age and comparable diagnosis, (2) nondisabled children of similar age, and (3) chronologically younger but developmentally similar nondisabled…
Descriptors: Classroom Observation Techniques, Developmental Disabilities, Intelligence, Interaction
Peer reviewedHawkins, Donald T.; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1988
Discusses the need for knowledge gateway systems to provide access to scattered information and the use of technologies in gateway building, including artificial intelligence and expert systems, networking, online retrieval systems, optical storage, and natural language processing. The status of four existing gateways is described. (20 references)…
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Information Networks, Information Retrieval, Information Technology
Vail, Priscilla L. – Principal, 1988
Discusses "conundrum kids," who are intelligent and talented, but struggle and often fail because their learning styles and developmental timetables do not match the materials, methods, or sequences of a standard curriculum. Shows how one student with receptive language problems was helped by language therapy and alternative teaching…
Descriptors: Case Studies, Communication Problems, Developmental Disabilities, Elementary Education
Peer reviewedFox, Edward A. – Information Services and Use, 1987
Discusses the need for experimental studies with realistic test collections to determine the applicability of advanced information storage and retrieval techniques. The results of studies that compared user reactions to Boolean, extended Boolean, vector, and vector with probabilistic feedback approaches are described. (42 references) (CLB)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Comparative Analysis, Needs Assessment, Online Searching
Peer reviewedCameron, Thomas H.; Kelly, Desmond P. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1988
The subject of this case report is a two-year, seven-month-old girl with de Lange syndrome, normal intelligence, and age-appropriate language skills. She demonstrated initial delays in gross motor skills and in receptive and expressive language but responded well to intensive speech and language intervention, as well as to physical therapy.…
Descriptors: Early Identification, Expressive Language, Intelligence, Intervention
Peer reviewedThompson, Don – Canadian Library Journal, 1988
Briefly describes the current status of artificial intelligence and expert systems, and explores the possible applications in libraries and information centers. The implications for reference services, classification and cataloging processes, and assistance to patrons desiring in-depth reading of an area of knowledge are discussed. (4 references)…
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Expert Systems, Independent Study, Library Automation
Peer reviewedLandau, Erika – Gifted International, 1987
The paper describes an enrichment program for gifted disadvantaged children (ages 5-15) in Tel Aviv, Israel. The program had both neighborhood programs and activities/programs outside the child's neighborhood including a summer camp program. Evaluation indicated substantial IQ increases after three semesters. (DB)
Descriptors: Community Programs, Elementary Secondary Education, Enrichment Activities, Foreign Countries
Peer reviewedHellwig, Harold – CALICO Journal, 1987
Describes a parsing program called "Analyzing Language" (AL). The Augmented Transition Network was modified to incorporate case grammar analysis. Turbo PASCAL is the program's language. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Case (Grammar), Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Software
Peer reviewedApplegate, Mauree – Childhood Education, 1988
Considers how educational practices may be disintegrating children's development of a sense of a self that strives toward integrity and wholeness. Focuses on the current overemphasis on homogeneous grouping and IQ tests, the dullness of modern textbooks, and the lack of encouragement of critical thinking skills. (SKC)
Descriptors: Critical Thinking, Educational Philosophy, Elementary Education, Homogeneous Grouping
Sebrechts, Marc M.; Schooler, Lael J. – Collegiate Microcomputer, 1987
Describes the development of an artificial intelligence system called GIDE that analyzes student errors in statistics problems by inferring the students' intentions. Learning strategies involved in problem solving are discussed and the inclusion of goal structures is explained. (LRW)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Assisted Instruction, Diagnostic Teaching, Inferences
Peer reviewedLachiewicz, Ave M.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Retardation, 1987
Retrospective longitudinal data on 21 boys with the fragile X syndrome were analyzed. Results indicated that 13 of the boys showed a significant decline in intelligence quotient at retest, suggesting that while young boys with this syndrome may be only mildly retarded, adults are usually moderately to severely retarded. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Genetics, Intelligence Quotient, Longitudinal Studies
Diffenbach, John – CAUSE/EFFECT, 1987
A pilot test study of an expert systems approach to university enrollment management, specifically admissions decisions, was conducted at Northeastern University. Other potential uses for expert systems in enrollment management are suggested. (Author/MLW)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, College Administration, College Admission, Computers
Peer reviewedHeaston, Patricia – Negro Educational Review, 1987
The assessment of mental ability in Chicago Public Schools has been changed. The changes are because of the disproportionate number of Black children who were assigned to mentally handicapped classes. Placement decisions are now made by multidisciplinary panels which consider the total child not just the outcomes of prior learning. (VM)
