Harter, Stephen P. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1984
Explores scientific inquiry as philosophical and behavioral model for online search specialist and information retrieval process. Nature of scientific research is described and online analogs to research concepts of variable, hypothesis formulation and testing, operational definition, validity, reliability, assumption, and cyclical nature of…

Sparck Jones, Karen – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The logic of different types of weighting are discussed, and experiments testing weighting schemes of these types are described. The results show that one type of weighting leads to material performance improvements in quite different collection environments. (22 references) (Author)

Hudrlik, Paul F. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
A new method of indexing functional groups in organic compounds is described, utilizing the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog sequence rule. Functional carbon atoms are first classified by functionality, a measure of the oxidation state, then ordered by means of a modified sequence rule. Substructure searching and other applications are discussed. (30…

Heller, Stephen R.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
A prototype of an interactive, conversational mass spectral search system, developed at the National Institutes of Health, has been tested since September 1971 and is now being used by more than 200 scientists in the U.S. and Canada, and will soon be used by the international mass spectrometry community. Thompson, Charles W. N. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Abstracts of a document have been generally considered a valuable aid to the reader in quickly determining the relevance of a document. A test of this hypothesis in three military laboratories was not supported. (71 references) (Author/SJ)

Levine, Emil H. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Through utilization of a subroutine which provides statistical information on relative usage of keywords, a conventional scientific and technical information (STINFO) retrieval system answers questions usually associated with a management information system. (1 reference) (Author/SJ)

Feldman, Robert S. – History Teacher, 1973
Detailed examples illustrate one of the possible applications for using the computer punch card for information retrieval in qualitative historical research, suggesting a time-saving method of organization for research data. (SM)
Descriptors: Data Collection, History, Information Retrieval, Information Storage
Chai, D. T. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The problems of using English for information retrival are delineated. The querying capability of a keyword dialog system is illustrated with actual computer output. Major advantages of this approach are: reduced ambiguity in requests, users may think in smaller functional units, and users may edit previous requests. (7 references) (Author/SJ)
Descriptors: Databases, English, Information Retrieval, Information Systems
Jonkers, H. Louis – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
A design method for information retrieval systems, based on a modelling technique, and derived from the general objectives and tasks set for the system is described. (12 references) (SJ)

Descriptors: Educational Programs, Educational Television, Film Libraries, Information Retrieval
Stanfel, Larry E. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
A review is given of doubly-chained trees for information retrieval. It is shown that the chaining steps may be of different cost depending upon whether the step is vertical or horizontal. The problem of constructing an optimal retrieval tree is formulated mathematically and a solution procedure given. (5 references) (Author/KE)

Lefever, Maureen; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
The operational retrospective retrieval service offered by BIOSIS exploits a file created essentially without vocabulary control. A pragmatic program of file building criteria has been persued which has provided improved retrieval and an annual summary of the vocabulary of the literature. (11 references) (Author/KE)
