Schuegraf, E. J. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The design of programs to search large document data bases is discussed with regard to the use of compression coding combined with adoption of word fragments as the basic language elements. An algorithm is described for determination of a set of almost equifrequent fragments. Its efficiency is tested. (23 references) (Author)

Wichterle, Ivan – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1974
Automatic processing of the bibliography on vapor-liquid equilibrium data is done by means of a specially developed mnemonic coding system. (Author/JB)

Romanec, Michael J. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1974
The boundary between two neighboring rings is called the fusion lines, which is enclosed by external segments called arcs. In the code, the separation of fusion line(s) from arcs takes place in such a way that proper matching is achieved. By this procedure, the structure of a compound is recreated. (Author)

Hovis, Watson B. – Journal of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, 1974
This article presents a proposal for a coordinated community recreation planning system, which includes an information storage, retrieval, and display system designed to assist a coalition of agencies in the decision-making process. (JA)

Chan, Lois Mai – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1973
The problem of the direct and inverted forms of adjective-noun subject headings which contain national adjectives is reexamined. A pattern based on subject categories is discovered which is different from the pattern based on work-frequency discussed in Harris' Subject Analysis. (11 references) (Author)

Adamson, George W.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
The distribution of bond-centered fragments which form a simple hierarchy have been investigated for a sample of substructure search queries. They are found to conform with the general pattern of fragment incidences in a file which might be used in a substructure search system. (8 references) (Author)

Katzer, Jeffrey; Moell, Patricia – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
There is evidence which suggests that users' attitudes toward on-line interactive retrieval systems may be multi-dimensional. Because this earlier work was based upon factor analysis of the data, it was essential that a replication be attempted. To this end a previous study with a new population of users was repeated. Katzer, Jeffrey – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The cost-performance evaluation of an on line free-text bibliographic retrieval system, SUPARS, is reported. Two measures of cost were used in the evaluation: a computer processing charge expressed in dollars, and the number of documents retrieved. The measure of performance was an estimate of the recall ratio. (11 references) (Author/SJ)

And Others; Lynch, Michael F. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
A high degree of constancy has been found in the microstructure of titles of samples of the INSPEC data base taken over a three-year period. Character and digram frequencies are relatively stable, while variable-length character-strings characterizing samples separated by three years in time show close similarities. Wilson, Patrick – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
Situationally relevant items of information are those that answer, or logically help to answer, questions of concern. Significant situationally relevant information is explained in terms of changes of view in relation to questions of concern. It is claimed that situational relevance is an explication of the ordinary notion of practical relevance.…

Jacquesson, Alain; Schieber, William D. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
An experiment to compute and analyze the degree of association between descriptors used to index a document collection of approximately 40,000 records is described. An analysis of the results is presented which indicates the difficulties inherent in applying the results to an operating system. (11 references) (Author)

Salton, G. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1972
The author emphasized that one cannot conclude from the experiments reported upon that term clusters (or equivalently, keyword classifications or thesauruses) are not useful in retrieval. (2 references) (Author)

Salton, G. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
A new testing process is described. The design of the test procedure is covered in detail, and the several language processing features incorporated into the SMART system are individually evaluated. (20 references) (Author)

Cooper, Michael D. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
The simulation model described is used as a tool for designing and evaluating literature search systems. The simulation program creates a well specified collection of documents and analyzes the effect of charges in query file characteristics on system output performance. (14 references) (Author/KE)
