Harding, Alan F.; Willett, Peter – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1980
Demonstrates that the process of comparing each document in an automated system with all others during the classification procedure may be avoided by the use of an inverted file. (FM)
Descriptors: Automatic Indexing, Classification, Cluster Grouping, Information Retrieval

Adams, Jerry; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1980
A system for translating clinical information into automatic data processing language and format was developed for use in a comprehensive learning disabilities diagnostic clinic. This allows for many cross-sectional and longitudinal research studies, as well as more consistent and efficient flow of information clinically. (Author)

Fenichel, Carol Hansen – Online Review, 1980
Five groups of searchers each performed searches using ONTAP ERIC to identify behaviors that differentiate among degrees of experience, and between searches of familiar and unfamiliar databases. Results showed that, compared to the experienced subjects, novices performed surprisingly well. Eight references are listed. (Author/SW)

Fenichel, Carol Hansen – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1981
Describes a study conducted to identify the differences among the searches of users of online systems who have different amounts of overall experience, and the differences between the searches of persons with and without experience on the database being searched. Twenty-five references are cited. (FM)
Descriptors: Bibliographies, Comparative Analysis, Competence, Information Retrieval

Bator, Eileen F. – Special Libraries, 1980
Describes the implementation of a user-oriented online indexing system at the Boys Town Center's Library Services Division. (FM)
Descriptors: Automatic Indexing, Bibliographies, Information Retrieval, Library Automation

And Others; Burket, T. J. – Information Processing and Management, 1979
Discusses the text retrieval system, EUREKA, and its techniques for helping the unsophisticated user through the search for and understanding of information based on the vocabulary file concept. Methods for easy construction and maintenance of a suitable data base organization through the EURUP system are described. (RAA)

Wilson, Patrick – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1979
Responds to W. S. Cooper's article on utility-theoretic indexing (Journal of the American Society for Information Science, v29 n3) and posits that the method's claim to predictive success rests solely on its appeal to the consequences of decisions. (FM)
Descriptors: Indexing, Information Retrieval, Information Theory, Opinions

Cooper, William S. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1979
Answers Patrick Wilson's criticism of the theory of utility-theoretic indexing (Journal of the American Society for Information Science, v30 n3) and defends the theory on the basis of its analytic capability. (FM)
Descriptors: Indexing, Information Retrieval, Information Theory, Opinions
Conger, Lucinda D. – Online, 1980
Examines the relative benefits and searching philosophies of five major search systems (DIALOG, ORBIT, BRS, NLM, and DOE/RECON) as a selection aid. Differences in command language, full text searching capability, use and expression of Boolean operators, and searching mechanisms are discussed, and comparison charts and system/database comparisons…

Adams, Arthur L. – Online Review, 1979
Discusses methods for designing search strategies for maximum recall, including minimizing the number of concepts intersected, isolating key subtopics, adapting the strategy to the database, and minimizing problems with search words and codes. (Author/RAA)
Descriptors: Data Analysis, Databases, Interviews, Online Systems

Rastogi, Kunj B. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1980
Considers a study of two models of name/title-derived search keys in a large online library network. Results predicted by the models are compared with results obtained from actual retrieval behavior of keys entered by users of the system. (FM)
Descriptors: Information Retrieval, Information Systems, Library Networks, Models

And Others; Van Slype, Georges – Online Review, 1980
Explains search commands for SERIDU, an online bibliographic search system developed at Brussels Free University. These commands and output formats are compared with Euronet commands (from which they were derived), with existing INFODOC storage system commands, and with the planned BIDULE system commands. An evaluation of SERIDU is included. (SW)

Salton, Gerald – Journal of Documentation, 1979
Examines the main mathematical approaches to information retrieval, including both algebraic and probabilistic models, and describes difficulties which impede formalization of information retrieval processes. A number of developments are covered where new theoretical understandings have directly led to improved retrieval techniques and operations.…

Peake, Dorothy G. – Australian Library Journal, 1979
Outlines the history, form of membership, legal incorporation, and technical aspects of the College Libraries Activity Network of New South Wales (CLANN) and describes Insearch DIAL (Division of Library and Information) Services and its place in the information services network. (RAO)
Descriptors: Databases, Information Networks, Information Retrieval, Information Systems
Gorman, Michael – American Libraries, 1979
Examines the potential benefits and problems for libraries using a fully automated short record circulation system, one that consists of a number designating the item, enough bibliographic information to identify it, information on its location, and information on the borrower. (FM)
Descriptors: Cataloging, Information Retrieval, Library Automation, Library Circulation
