Carrier, Carol; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1983
The effects of rate repetition, self-generated visualization, and supplied visuals on the memorization of concrete noun-word pairs were investigated using 27 gifted children in grades four to six. The hypothesis that self-generated imagery techniques would be superior to supplied visuals was not supported. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Academically Gifted, Intermediate Grades, Learning Processes, Memory
Belmore, Susan M. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1981
Experiments were performed to determine the contribution of imagery and semantic factors to the hypermnesia effect (increases in retention over successive recall attempts). Results showed that hypermnesia accompanies meaningful processing regardless of whether verbal or imagery encoding is emphasized. Semantic elaboration increases reminiscence…
Descriptors: Cues, Higher Education, Imagery, Learning Processes

Winograd, Eugene; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1982
Compared verbal and visual encoding using the picture superiority effect. One experiment found an interaction between age and type of material. In other experiments, the picture superiority effect was found in both age groups with no interaction. Performing a semantic-orienting task had no effect on recall. (Author/RC)
Descriptors: Adults, Age Differences, Aging (Individuals), Cognitive Processes

Higbee, Kenneth L. – Review of Educational Research, 1979
Recent research on visual imagery mnemonic techniques is compared to research in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Results of recent research are discussed in terms of practical implications for education. (Author/MH)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Educational Trends, Eidetic Imagery, History

Colbert, Cynthia – Studies in Art Education, 1980
This study examined the relationship between the visual elaboration characteristic of paired-associate learning and figural elaboration as found in the graphic representations of preadolescents (ages 8-12) and as measured by nonverbal creativity measures. Significant correlations between figural variables and one or both visual variables were…
Descriptors: Childrens Art, Correlation, Creative Thinking, Elementary Education

Burnett, Sarah A.; Lane, David M. – Intelligence, 1980
Two spatial visualization tests were administered to 142 students before and after two years of college study. Students majoring in the humanities and social sciences improved less than those majoring in mathematics and the physical sciences. Female physical science majors improved more than male physical science majors. (Author/RD)
Descriptors: College Curriculum, College Mathematics, Correlation, Higher Education

Emmerich, Helen Jones – Developmental Psychology, 1979
Ratings of concreteness and picturability and production data for meaningfulness of 310 words were gathered from sixth-grade children and college students. (JMB)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Age Differences, College Students, Elementary Education

Roth, Steven F.; Chuah, Mei C.; Kerpedjiev, Stephan; Kolojejchick, John A.; Lucas, Peter – Human-Computer Interaction, 1997
Presents an information visualization workspace in which users are able to explore data presented in diverse but coordinated formats using related systems called Visage, SAGE, and selective dynamic manipulation (SDM). Discusses four dimensions for analyzing user interfaces that reveal the combination of design approaches needed for visualizations…
Descriptors: Computer Interfaces, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer System Design, Data Analysis
Davenport, Elisabeth; Graham, Martin; Kennedy, Jessie; Taylor, Katharine – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2003
This research attempts to identify how social capital is manifest within the contexts of small firm networks that rely on rapid turnover of projects. Presents work to date that converts tacit knowledge into sets of explicit and manageable local data, and provides examples of information visualizations for profiling and retrieval that support the…
Descriptors: Corporations, Information Networks, Information Retrieval, Information Seeking

Arcavi, Abraham – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2003
Defines visualization as the product and the process of creation, interpretation, and reflection upon pictures and images. Analyzes, exemplifies, and reflects upon the many different and rich roles that it can and should play in the learning and doing of mathematics. Discusses limitations and possible sources of difficulties visualization may pose…

Modjeska, David; Chignell, Mark – Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2003
Discussion of information visualization and computer graphics focuses on a study that contrasted performance in three dimensional (3D) and two dimensional zooming interactively (2.5D) virtual worlds for people with differing levels of spatial and structure learning ability. Suggests implications of individual differences for the usability and…
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Comparative Analysis, Computer Graphics, Individual Differences

Boyack, Kevin W.; Borner, Katy – Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2003
Reports research on analyzing and visualizing the impact of government funding on the amount and citation counts of research publications. Provides an example using grant and publication data from Behavioral and Social Science Research at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) using the VxInsight[R] visualization tool. (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Behavioral Science Research, Citation Analysis, Federal Aid, Government Role

Gardella, Francis J. – Mathematics Teacher, 2000
Illustrates ways of using algebra tiles to give students a visual model of competing squares that appear in algebra as well as in higher mathematics. Such visual representations give substance to the symbolic manipulation and give students who do not learn symbolically a way of understanding the underlying concepts of completing the square. (KHR)
Descriptors: Algebra, Concept Formation, Learning Strategies, Manipulative Materials
Garfield, Eugene; Pudovkin, A. I.; Istomin, V. S. – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2002
Discussion of mapping and visualizing in scholarly literature focuses on the development of software called HistCite for generating chronological maps of collections, where all cited references for source documents are captured, using scientific literature as an example. Generates tables of the most-cited works to help searchers identify the most…
