Ellis, David; And Others – Journal of Documentation, 1994
Describes a study in which several different sets of hypertext links are inserted by different people in full-text documents. The degree of similarity between the sets is measured using coefficients and topological indices. As in comparable studies of inter-indexer consistency, the sets of links used by different people showed little similarity.…

Brooks, Randy M. – Technical Communication: Journal of the Society for Technical Communication, 1993
Argues that effective hypermedia designs should meet four goals: (1) minimize clutter so that the document looks and feels simple to use; (2) create an image appropriate to the corporate sponsor and to the users' expectations; (3) provide ready access to stored information; (4) minimize the effort, technology, and resources needed. (SR)

Molto, Mavis – Information Processing and Management, 1993
Describes a study that was conducted to explore the potential of text analysis as a tool in full-text search and design improvement. A review of pertinent literature is included, and a trial analysis performed in the domain of family history literature is described. (Contains 49 references.) (LRW)

Mahoney, Dan – Database, 1991
Presents a dBASE III searching/micro tip that will reveal whether any journals listed within a capture log file are in local holdings. An example gives the commands needed to use the ISSN field in the citations to search a local holdings database. (DB)

Gordon, Michael D. – Information Processing and Management, 1991
Presents a theoretical rationale for employing a form of information retrieval algorithm that helps searchers better navigate through large document collections by continually revising probability estimates for document subsets. The algorithm avoids assumptions of index term independence and predicts relevance more accurately with increasing…

Byrnes, James P.; Guthrie, John T. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1992
The role of a subject's conceptual knowledge in the procedural task of searching a text for information was studied for 51 college undergraduates in 2 experiments involving knowledge of anatomy. Students with more anatomical information were able to search a text more quickly. Educational implications are discussed. (SLD)

Dunlop, Mark D.; van Rijsbergen, C. J. – Information Processing and Management, 1993
Discusses access to nontextual documents in large multimedia document bases. A hybrid information retrieval model, using queries in a hypertext environment for location of browsing areas, is presented; and two experiments using cluster-based descriptions of content are reported. (23 references) (EA)

Arents, Hans C.; Bogaerts, Walter F. L. – Information Processing and Management, 1993
Discusses and examines two approaches to concept-based retrieval of hypermedia information that improve a user's ability to navigate large systems--term indexing with semantically coupled thesauri and semantic hyperindexing. Visualization of index structures is discussed, and an example, the Cube of Contents retrieval model for the "Active…

Tenopir, Carol; Hover, Katie – Online, 1993
Examines how online versions of databases vary on different systems. Differences are grouped into three categories: obvious differences, including easily available information such as updating, dates covered, and price; database choice, including subfile structure, field structure, and content; and system choice, including support and system…

Chen, Zhengxin – Information Processing and Management, 1993
Describes a conceptual model for integrating short scientific texts, which extends classical text storage and retrieval. A brief comparison with related approaches such as case-based reasoning and classification-based reasoning is also provided. (13 references) (Author/KRN)

Nunn, Samuel – Evaluation Review, 1993
Assessed the impact of the Mobile Digital Terminal technology (computers used to communicate with remote crime databases) on motor vehicle theft clearance (arresting a perpetrator) and recovery rates in Fort Worth (Texas), using a time series analysis. Impact has been ambiguous, with little evidence of improved clearance or recovery. (SLD)

Giguere, Marlene – Education Libraries, 1993
Describes 38 introductory print materials the novice may consult before using the Internet, including guides and directories to resources; general information about the Internet; materials about Internet applications such as electronic mail, remote login, and file transfer; and information about Internet tools such as Archie, Gopher, and WAIS…

Bell, Timothy C.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1993
Describes compression methods for components of full-text systems such as text databases on CD-ROM. Topics discussed include storage media; structures for full-text retrieval, including indexes, inverted files, and bitmaps; compression tools; memory requirements during retrieval; and ranking and information retrieval. (Contains 53 references.)…

Van Schyndel, A. J. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1990
Advantages and disadvantages are presented for various voice indexing systems for accessing recorded material for visually impaired people. The Van Schyndel Voice Indexing System, which allows a spoken index to be recorded at regular recording speed, is described, focusing on operation procedures and components of the original and…

Stephens, Irving E. – Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, 1991
Notes that researchers miss useful references because of unsystematic methodology and because on-going efforts at systematic bibliography have not utilized some key resources. Argues that, although no combination of available resources guarantees comprehensive bibliographic coverage for technical communication, composition, or rhetoric,…
