Salt, Barry – Film Quarterly, 1974
A study of the patterns of shot length and camera distance and movement in over fifteen feature films. (CH)
Descriptors: Editing, Film Production, Film Study, Films

Hirsch, Christian R. – Mathematics Teacher, 1978
Three activities that involve space perception, the concept of geometric equivalence, and Euler's formula regarding regular polyhedra are described. (JT)
Descriptors: Experiential Learning, Geometric Concepts, Pattern Recognition, Secondary Education

Kosslyn, Stephen M.; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1988
Results of three experiments are reported, which indicate that images of simple two-dimensional patterns are formed sequentially. The subjects included 48 undergraduates and 16 members of the Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass.) community. A new objective methodology indicates that images of complex letters require more time to generate. (TJH)
Descriptors: Higher Education, Letters (Alphabet), Pattern Recognition, Research Methodology

McLaughlin, Gary L. – Exercise Exchange, 1988
Emphasizes classroom study of poetic patterns and images to enable students to see how poems work without overwhelming them with terminology. (MS)
Descriptors: Creative Writing, Imagery, Pattern Recognition, Poetry

Kagan, Jerome – Developmental Psychology, 1987
Reply by Jerome Kagan to a recent article by Block, Gjerde, and Block (1986) which questions the validity of the construct of reflection-impulsivity. Kagan alleges flaws in the logic of the authors' (Block, Gjerde, Block) position and in the inferences drawn from their data. (Author/RWB)
Descriptors: Character Recognition, Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Development, Conceptual Tempo

Block, Jack – Developmental Psychology, 1987
Responds to the arguments and evidence adduced by Kagan (1987) in his reply to the Block, Gjerde, and Block (1986) study questioning the validity of the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) as a measure of "reflection-impulsivity." (Author)
Descriptors: Character Recognition, Cognitive Ability, Cognitive Development, Conceptual Tempo

Biederman, Irving – Psychological Review, 1987
The theory proposed (recognition-by-components) hypothesizes the perceptual recognition of objects to be a process in which the image of the input is segmented at regions of deep concavity into an arrangement of simple geometric components. Experiments on the perception of briefly presented pictures support the theory. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Object Permanence, Pattern Recognition, Psychological Studies, Symmetry

Humphrey, G. Keith; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1986
Reports on four experiments on pattern perception in four-month-old infants. The first experiment examined preference for patterns varying in structure; the second examined encoding patterns from different subset sizes; and the last two experiments examined changes in the size, position, and orientation of the habituation pattern. (HOD)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Habituation, Infants, Orientation

Litwiller, Bonnie H.; Duncan, David R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
Descriptors: Addition, Elementary School Mathematics, Instruction, Mathematical Enrichment

Greenberg, David J.; And Others – Child Development, 1973
To demonstrate a relationship between rate of habituation and complexity levels, 11-week-old infants (N=51) were each given a rate-of-habituation and complexity-level test. Rapid habituators looked longer at complex patterns. Irregular habituators responded randomly to tests or resembled slow habituators in terms of complexity preferred. (ST)
Descriptors: Attention, Cognitive Development, Difficulty Level, Infants

Hall, James W.; Halperin, Marcia S. – Developmental Psychology, 1972
The present study tested the feasibility of using a purely verbal recognition-memory procedure with young children and examined the role of verbal associations in the memory encoding of such children. (Author)
Descriptors: Associative Learning, Data Analysis, Memory, Pattern Recognition

Millar, Susanna – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1971
Descriptors: Cues, Pattern Recognition, Preschool Children, Recognition

Mayrides, Cynthia M. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1971
Descriptors: Attention, Discrimination Learning, Measurement, Pattern Recognition

Robinson, James P.; London, Perry – Child Development, 1971
Clarifies some of the conditions under which verbal processes facilitate or inhibit learning of visual stimuli. (Author/AJ)
Descriptors: Codification, Elementary School Students, Learning Activities, Memory

Farrell, Margaret A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1971
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Geometry, Learning, Learning Processes
