van Loosbroek, Erik; Smitsman, Ad. W. – Developmental Psychology, 1990
Infants were tested at 5, 8, and 13 months of age for numerosity perception. Subjects observed displayed figures on a screen moving at constant speed with irregular trajectories and occasional occlusions. Results demonstrated that discrimination of units, and not of characteristic patterns, underlies numerosity perception. (BC)

Bialystok, Ellen – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2000
Two studies examined understanding of notational representation among 3- to 5-year-olds. Children solved problems when shown cards with a picture or word indicating identity or a quantity indicator. In the easier condition, children had difficulty solving the problems as a function of their familiarity with the notation, suggesting weaknesses in…

Calder, Nigel; Brown, Tony; Hanley, Una; Darby, Susan – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2006
This paper is concerned with the use of spreadsheets within mathematical investigational tasks. Considering the learning of both children and pre-service teaching students, it examines how mathematical phenomena can be seen as a function of the pedagogical media through which they are encountered. In particular, it shows how pedagogical apparatus…

Gingerich, Wallace J.; And Others – Social Work, 1976
Most social work professionals take it for granted that the more training one has, the better one can do the job. But the authors' research on assessments by both MSW and BA candidates yielded results that could seriously question that assumption. (Author)

Kolers, Paul A.; Ostry, David J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1974
A study is reported in which subjects were shown sentences, some of which they had read previously, after intervals ranging from a few minutes to 32 days. Results show that information about typography can be recovered for at least 32 days after initial reading. Implications are discussed. (Author/RM)
