Gray, Edward T., Jr.; Workman, Harry J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Describes and evaluates the fabrication of an easily constructed and inexpensive stop-flow system using commercially available components. (CS)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education

Dyson, W. – Education in Chemistry, 1980
Described is a procedure for the study of condensation polymerisation. The objectives of this study are to help students understand concepts that are somewhat abstract in nature (i.e., polymerisation) through derivation of equations that help to describe and predict the particular phenomena. (CS)

Leung, W. P.; And Others – Physics Education, 1980
Describes a project on the application of the laser which aims to stimulate the interest of undergraduate students in applied physics and to demonstrate the interaction between light and ultrasonic waves by building a simple laser communication system. (SK)
Descriptors: College Science, Electronics, Engineering Education, Higher Education

Post, Elroy W. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Presents an experiment involving photochemical legand displacement on a metal carbonyl, separation of the product mixture by chromotography, and identification of the components by use of infrared spectroscopy and group theory. The chromatography and spectroscopy are combined as complementary tools in this experiment. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Chromatography, College Science, Higher Education
Walker, Jearl – Scientific American, 1981
Describes a method to detect the presence of microgram quantities of nearly any metal in samples of alloys, minerals, water, and air. This chemical-spot testing technique requires no elaborate equipment and can be done by an amateur. (SK)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, College Science, Higher Education

Franklin, Allan; Smokler, Howard – American Journal of Physics, 1981
Presents history, nature of evidence evaluated, and philosophical questions to justify the view that experiments on parity nonconservation were "crucial" experiments in the sense that they decided unambiguously and within a short period of time for the appropriate scientific community, between two or more competing theories or classes of theories.…

Clement, Gerard – American Journal of Physics, 1980
The motivation and interpretation of the Fizeau experiment are reviewed, and its status as a test of special relativity is discussed. It is shown, with the aid of a simplified, purely mechanical model of the propagation of light in matter, that the experiment actually cannot discriminate between Galilean and relativistic kinematics. (Author/SK)

Lunetta, Vincent N.; And Others – Science Teacher, 1981
Describes different evaluation techniques of student performance in the science laboratory. Evaluation techniques discussed include written reports, test items, practical tests, and observational assessment to evaluate both student performance and to promote development of specific skills. (DS)

Griffin, John J.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Describes a nuclear debris collector which removes trace substances from the lower atmosphere during rainfall. Suggests that the collector could be implemented into courses at various educational levels and could result in developing a network for monitoring the geographical extent of nuclear contamination. (Author/SA)

Schatz, Paul F. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Describes a laboratory experiment which demonstrates manipulation of highly reactive chemicals, use of a gas trap, and simple and reduced pressure distillation. Student must characterize starting material and product with nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Instructional Materials

Batson, W. Brayton; Laswick, Patty H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Presents information intended to encourage students to become thoughtful consumers. Discusses the role of pepsin in splitting off amino acids from stomach proteins and the nature of the protein substrate in determining the ph at which pepsin operates. Directions for an experiment are included. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Instructional Materials

Sims, James S.; Ewing, George E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
The experiments described in this article discuss the versatility of the linear variation method in quantum chemistry and the ease with which it can be used with a simple computer program. (SA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Computation, Computer Programs

Ondrus, Martin G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
This is an experiment for college chemistry students in which they are introduced to gas phase and aerosal analysis and the chemical nature of cigarette smoke and its health hazards. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Health Education, Higher Education

Padilla, Michael – Science and Children, 1979
Presents an idea for insect study with live organisms. The life cycle of the common housefly and the behavior of the adult and larvae are discussed. Activities for young students are given along with information for the teacher on the fly's life history. (SA)
Descriptors: Class Activities, Elementary Education, Elementary School Science, Entomology
