Ward, Thomas B. – Cognitive Psychology, 1994
Results of 5 experiments involving 385 undergraduates imagining animals from another galaxy are consistent with the idea that similar structures and processes underlie creative and noncreative aspects of cognition. The concept of structured imagination and the role of characteristic properties are explored. (SLD)

Wattenmaker, William D. – Cognitive Psychology, 1995
Seven experiments involving over 700 undergraduate students investigated whether the naturalness of abstract category structures varies with content domain. Results indicate that the structure of knowledge varies with domain and that it would be difficult to formulate general constraints on categorization in terms of abstract structural…

Mack, Arien; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1992
Six experiments with 145 adult student subjects were performed to determine whether texture segregation and grouping by similarity are perceived under conditions of inattention. Results establish that neither is accomplished under conditions of inattention, indicating that there is an earlier stage of processing than that called preattentive. (SLD)

Rindskopf, David – Psychometrika, 1992
A general approach is described for the analysis of categorical data when there are missing values on one or more observed variables. The method is based on generalized linear models with composite links. Situations in which the model can be used are described. (SLD)

Haiman, John – Language Sciences, 1993
The arbitrariness of linguistic categories is discussed. Consideration of some other fields of human activity suggests that the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is true, and it is suggested that the process of grammaticalization might be understood as a kind of ritualization. (57 references) (Author/LB)

Cohen, Ira L.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1993
Neural network technology was compared with simultaneous and stepwise linear discriminant analysis in terms of their ability to classify and predict persons (n=138) as having autism or mental retardation. The neural network methodology was superior in both classifying groups and in generalizing to new cases that were not part of the training…

Barlow, John Perry – Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science, 1994
Presents a taxonomy of information that may be useful in dealing with the protection of intellectual property. Information is examined as an activity; as a life form, including the desire to change; and as a relationship, including value, authority, execution of ideas, and economic issues. (LRW)

Millsap, Roger E.; Meredith, William – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Mathematical relationships between three-mode component analysis and stationary component analysis are explored. Theorems are presented giving constraints that must be satisfied for equivalency between component representations provided by the methods. In general, the two approaches give mathematically distinct representations. (SLD)

Stubblefield, Harold W.; Rachal, John R. – Adult Education Quarterly, 1992
The term "adult education" was used in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Melvil Dewey developed a typology of adult education, and Henry Leipziger promoted New York City's Free Lectures program as an institute of liberal adult education. Blewitt, Pamela; Krackow, Elisa – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1992
On picture matching and word recall tasks, children performed better on slot-fillers, or items classed in a superordinate category (such as food) and in the same event context (such as eating breakfast), than on coordinates, or items classed in a superordinate category but in different event contexts. (BC)

Ball, Martin J. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
This paper examines the need for a transcription system that allows the symbolization of nonnormal articulations. The paper then describes transcription systems proposed by clinical phoneticians and speech pathologists, especially PRDS (phonetic representation of disordered speech) symbols and extensions of the International Phonetic Alphabet.…
