Peer reviewedWesterback, Mary Elizabeth; Azer, Nazmy – Journal of Geological Education, 1991
Presents a rock classification scheme for use by beginning students. The scheme is based on rock textures (glassy, crystalline, clastic, and organic framework) and observable structures (vesicles and graded bedding). Discusses problems in other rock classification schemes which may produce confusion, misidentification, and anxiety. (10 references)…

Peer reviewedGibbs, Raymond W., Jr. – Psychological Review, 1992
S. Glucksberg and B. Keysar's (1990) class-inclusion view of metaphor understanding does not properly acknowledge metaphor's role in everyday cognition. Metaphor is a powerful scheme in long-term memory by which people make sense of their experiences. Evidence supports tacit conceptual metaphor's role in comprehension of verbal metaphors in…

Peer reviewedSmith, George – British Journal of Educational Technology, 1992
Reviews models of staff development in British higher education. Five micro models of staff development practice are described and evaluated; three macro models of staff development responsibility are identified; relationships between micro and macro models are discussed; and the most suitable models are suggested. (20 references) (LRW)
Descriptors: Classification, Comparative Analysis, Foreign Countries, Higher Education
Peer reviewedBertucci, Raffaella – Environmental Education and Information, 1994
Explains methods for the survey, classification, and mapping of the visual characteristics of landscapes, independently from the subjective aspects of perception. (Contains 18 references.) (Author/MDH)
Descriptors: Cartography, Classification, Environmental Education, Foreign Countries
Optimizing the Classification Performance of Logistic Regression and Fisher's Discriminant Analyses.
Peer reviewedYarnold, Paul R.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1994
A methodology is proposed to optimize the training classification performance of any suboptimal model. The method, referred to as univariate optimal discriminant analysis (UniODA), is illustrated through application to a two-group logistic regression analysis with 12 empirical examples. Maximizing percentage accuracy in classification is…

Peer reviewedClementini, Eliseo; Di Felice, Paolino – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1994
Proposes an object-oriented conceptual data model tailored for organizing and representing basic map elements and their relationships, as well as operations of interest for the management of geographic data. Discussion includes both conceptual abstraction primitives (classification, generalization, and aggregation) and a spatial abstraction…

Peer reviewedMurphy, Lorna; Pollatsek, Alexander – Annals of Dyslexia, 1994
This study of 65 children (ages 10-13) with dyslexia found no discrete subgroups. Variability in performance on reading tasks was quite similar for the dyslexic and reading age-control groups. A few children with dyslexia resembled phonological dyslexics and surface dyslexics, but these subjects were still part of a continuum. (Author/JDD)

Peer reviewedMaguire, Russell W.; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1994
The matching-to-sample performances of three young adults with autism and four children (ages four to nine) without intellectual disabilities were examined in three experiments using complex sample stimuli. Results for all subjects showed that each of two redundant relevant sample elements and their respective comparison stimuli were substitutable…

Peer reviewedWaxman, Sandra R.; Kosowski, Toby D. – Child Development, 1990
A series of experiments revealed that noun-category bias in children's word learning is present as early as two years of age. Findings indicate that, when children interpret the meaning of novel nouns, they do not sample randomly from the range of possible meanings but focus instead on category relations. (RH)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Bias, Classification, Nouns
Peer reviewedLucas, Robert A. – Journal of the Society of Research Administrators, 1988
The tradition of negotiating indirect costs in grants should be abandoned, and research administrators should instead offer different levels of service depending on what the sponsor wants to spend. Three levels of overhead rate are suggested (super, regular, and economy) and their corresponding levels of service are defined. (MSE)
Descriptors: Classification, Cost Effectiveness, Grants, Higher Education
Peer reviewedKvalseth, Tarald O. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1991
An asymmetric version of J. Cohen's kappa statistic is presented as an appropriate measure for the agreement between two observers classifying items into nominal categories, when one observer represents the "standard." A numerical example with three categories is provided. (SLD)
Descriptors: Classification, Equations (Mathematics), Interrater Reliability, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedZelazo, Philip David; Reznick, J. Stephen – Child Development, 1991
The ability of 31- to 36-month-old children to act in accordance with rules was assessed in 2 slightly different experiments using sorting tasks and knowledge tasks. Taken together, the results of both experiments imply a relatively rapid, age-related change culminating in the ability to systematically execute rules that require access to extant…
Descriptors: Age Differences, Classification, Cognitive Development, Information Processing
Gorman, Michael – American Libraries, 1992
Argues that librarianship is intimately connected to the structures and thought patterns of bibliographic control and that bibliographic control should be the theme for all practical coursework in library education. A sample syllabus is proposed. (EA)
Descriptors: Cataloging, Classification, Course Descriptions, Higher Education
Peer reviewedHalfacree, K. H. – Journal of Rural Studies, 1993
Outlines three broad approaches to defining the rural and concludes that only the discussion of the rural as locality is adequate. Introduces a theory of social representations of the rural and its relevance to the rural definition debate. (152 references) (KS)
Descriptors: Classification, Definitions, Rural Areas, Social Environment
Peer reviewedEisenberg, Michael B.; Small, Ruth V. – Information Processing and Management, 1993
Describes the concept of Information Based Education, provides a theoretical basis for investigating the role of information in education, and begins developing a classification scheme for documenting and distinguishing among information bases. Attributes of information associated with information resources, information skills, information…
