Peer reviewedValiant, Gayle; Glachan, M. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1982
Children considered preoperational on multiple classification skills and left-right conceptions were trained to work on classification problems under different conditions, including two variations of children working in pairs, and a situation in which children worked alone. Those in collective conditions progressed more significantly than those in…
Descriptors: Children, Classification, Cognitive Development, Social Integration
Peer reviewedKeogh, Barbara K. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1983
The author suggests that, if the purpose of classification is to provide educational services, the category of learning disabilities be used to describe pupils with mild handicaps. She cites the folly of research on sytem-selected students because system-selection decisions are biased by political, practical, and financial influences. (CL)
Descriptors: Classification, Definitions, Elementary Secondary Education, Learning Disabilities
Peer reviewedShort, Edmund C. – Curriculum Inquiry, 1983
Analyzes and classifies various forms of curriculum development strategies; reviews and summarizes their use in terms of their major characteristics and consequences; analyzes their relative merits with respect to 10 criteria; and, finally, discusses their policy implications. (MLF)
Descriptors: Change Strategies, Classification, Curriculum Development, Elementary Secondary Education
De Grazia, Edward; Newman, Roger K. – School Library Journal, 1982
This discussion of movie censorship outlines federal court cases involving controversial films which led to the development of the Motion Picture Association of America Code and Rating System. The Age-Classification System and the President's Commission on Obscenity and Pornography established in 1968 are described. (EJS)
Descriptors: Censorship, Classification, Court Litigation, Federal Courts
Peer reviewedKwan, Kenneth – Canadian Journal of Native Education, 1981
The "two context-oriented" typologies identify implications of current bilingual education, provide practical guidelines to develop a desirable form of bilingual education, and contribute to the development of a theoretical framework to unfold the complexities of social, economic, and political implications of bilingual education. (ERB)
Descriptors: Bilingual Education, Classification, Cultural Interrelationships, Economic Factors
Peer reviewedBellezza, Francis S. – Review of Educational Research, 1981
Four aspects of the study of mnemonic devices are discussed: (1) justification for research; (2) classification of common mnemonic devices; (3) description of properties of effective cognitive cuing structures; and (4) discussion of methodological problems in past research. Also included is a description of the recent history of research on…

Peer reviewedLaMotte, Lynn Roy; McWhorter, Archer, Jr. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
A linear regression function is developed for use in a classification procedure. The procedure is applied to faculty merit review data, resulting in an interpretable regression function and within-sample classifications as good as a four-funtion discriminant analysis. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: Classification, Discriminant Analysis, Faculty Evaluation, Higher Education
Peer reviewedRomiszowski, Alexander J. – British Journal of Educational Technology, 1981
Discusses the limitations of existing instructional design models, including Gagne's, and describes a new, more complete model meant to improve upon those now in use. Twenty-four references are appended. (LLS)
Descriptors: Affective Objectives, Bibliographies, Classification, Cognitive Objectives
Peer reviewedHuang, Ming-Shiunn – Journal of Psychology, 1981
Pettigrew's Category Width Scale was administered to 150 first-year psychology students in a study designed to relate a cognitive style dimension, category width, to individual preferences in information processing strategies. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Classification, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style, College Students
Peer reviewedPickett, Lawrence K., Jr. – Criminal Justice and Behavior, 1981
The MMPI results obtained from 245 adolescent males referred to the evaluation unit of a Juvenile Court were submitted to a multivariate classification system. By correlating individual subject profiles with the modal profiles, six membership groups were formed. No relationship was found between group membership and age or race. (Author)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Age, Classification, Cluster Grouping
Peer reviewedTversky, Amos; Gati, Itamar – Psychological Review, 1982
The coincidence hypothesis predicts that dissimilarity between objects that differ on two separable dimensions is larger than predicted from their unidimensional differences on the basis of triangle inequality and segmental additivity. The coincidence hypothesis was supported in two-dimensional stimuli studies. (Author/CM)
Descriptors: Classification, Discriminant Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedSchvaneveldt, Roger W.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
Six different categorization tasks were studied in an investigation of the effects of semantic relatedness on categorization performance. An intersection model is proposed to account for the findings, which are generally inconsistent with decision-bias theories and with simple versions of spreading activation theory. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Classification, Cognitive Processes, Higher Education, Models
Peer reviewedMervis, Carolyn B.; Crisafi, Maria A. – Child Development, 1982
Conducted among children of three different age levels, Experiment I tested the hypothesis that categorization ability is acquired in the following order: basic, superordinate, subordinate. Experiments II and III tested among adults the hypothesis that the greater the differentiation of categories at a given hierarchical level, the earlier…

Peer reviewedAdams, William; And Others – Child Welfare, 1982
Anonymous reports are routinely accepted for investigation as part of nationwide effort to counteract child abuse and neglect. However, reports pose difficulties for investigators and frequently prove false.
