Miyamoto, Sadaaki – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
Develops a method of rough retrieval, an application of the rough set theory to information retrieval. The aim is to: (1) show that rough sets are naturally applied to information retrieval in which categorized information structure is used; and (2) show that a fuzzy retrieval scheme is induced from the rough retrieval. (AEF)

Lingras, P. J.; Yao, Y. Y. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
Examines basic issues of data mining using the theory of rough sets, a recent proposal for generalizing classical set theory. Demonstrates that a generalized rough set model can be used for generating rules from incomplete databases. Discusses the importance of rule extraction from incomplete databases in data mining. (AEF)

Waldo, Michael; Bauman, Sheri – Journal for Specialists in Group Work, 1998
Describes the four group-work categories developed by the Association for Specialists in Group Work as problematic in that the goal and process dimensions of group work are combined within each category. Proposes a new model for classification that separates goals and process dimensions, forming a matrix that allows for more accurate…

Krascum, Ruth M.; Andrews, Sally – Child Development, 1998
Two experiments examined 4- to 5-year-olds' acquisition of family-resemblance categories for fictitious animals. Results showed that children who performed theory-guided learning were more successful at making feature/category associations than children who performed similarity-guided learning and categorized attributes significantly better than…

Waxman, Sandra R.; Lynch, Elizabeth B.; Casey, K. Lyman; Baer, Leslie – Developmental Psychology, 1997
Three experiments examine how preschoolers partition their basic level categories to form subordinate level categories and whether these have inductive potential. Results suggest that contrastive information promotes the emergence of subordinate categories as a basis of inductive inference and newly established subordinate categories can retain…

Siegler, Robert S.; Chen, Zhe – Cognitive Psychology, 1998
Trial-by-trial strategy assessments and a microgenetic design were used to examine the learning of rules for solving balance scale problems by 70 4- and 70 5-year olds. Developmental differences in learning that emerged seemed to reflect both distal and proximal influences. Encoding and initial rule use were related to different learning process…

Hoffman, Rose Marie; Borders, L. DiAnne – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2001
Respondents' Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) classifications may differ considerably on the basis of the form and scoring method used. The BSRI was reexamined with respect to past and present relevance. (Contains 62 references and 3 tables.) (Author)

Langstrom, Niklas; Grann, Martin; Lindblad, Frank – Journal of Adolescence, 2000
Uses data concerning all young sex offenders (N=56) to construct and validate an introductory young sex offender typology based solely on offense characteristics. A 5-cluster solution received optimal support from cluster analysis of 15 offense-related variables. Survival analysis revealed that the clusters differed with respect to sexual but not…

Samuelson, Larissa K.; Smith, Linda B. – Child Development, 2000
Four experiments investigated 3-year-olds' understanding of the differential importance of shape for categorizing solid objects. Found that they categorized rigid and deformable objects differently in a non-naming task and knew that material was important for deformable items and shape for rigid items. In two naming tasks, they generalized names…

Diesendruck, Gil – Developmental Psychology, 2001
Investigated whether Brazilian 4-year-olds held essentialist beliefs about animal categories. Found that middle class and poor children were equally likely to interpret labels as referring to mutually exclusive animal categories, and more likely to accept a common label for animals sharing internal properties than superficial properties,…

Bavis, Ryan W.; Seveyka, Jerred; Shigeoka, Cassie A. – American Biology Teacher, 2000
Defines dichotomous keys as common learning tools based on identification rather than memorization. Provides an example of a dichotomous key developed for introducing histology in human anatomy and physiology (A&P) courses and explains how students can use the dichotomous key. Discusses the goals of the exercises and the process of…
