Kehoe, Jerard F. Tenopyr, Mary L. – Psychological Assessment, 1994
Methods of adjusting group differences in assessment and test scores are described, classified, and evaluated. Investigation of the relationship between intended use of test scores and the appropriate meaning of scores is essential for fair treatment in assessment. (SLD)

Moshman, David – Human Development, 1995
Proposes a theory of reasoning and outlines four general types of reasoning (case-based, law-based, coherence-based, and dialectical) based on the constraints the reasoning seeks to honor. The development of reasoning is presented as a continuing construction and reconstruction of self-constraints and justifications for those constraints,…

Megargee, Edwin I. – Psychological Assessment, 1995
The methodological and practical problems that are especially common in or unique to assessment research in correctional settings are discussed. The distinctive culture of correctional institutions and the complications caused by governing bodies contribute to the particular problems encountered in collecting and analyzing data. (SLD)

Giordano, Richard – Library Resources & Technical Services, 1994
Describes the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) project and the TEI header, which documents electronic text in a standard interchange format understandable to both librarian catalogers and nonlibrarian text encoders. The form and function of the TEI header is introduced, and its relationship to the MARC record is explained. (10 references) (KRN)

Tinsley, Howard E. A.; Eldredge, Barbara D. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1995
Proposes a needs-based taxonomy of leisure activities. Study participants (n=3,771) indicated the extent to which leisure activities met different psychological needs. Results support theories that leisure experiences affect individuals' physical and mental health. Provides a taxonomy of 12 leisure activity clusters so as to allow greater…

Johnson, Kathy E.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1992
Judgments of similarity among mammals, including humans, were elicited from 7 and 10 year olds and adults. Results partially supported a consensus model of shared cultural knowledge. Patterns of deviation from the model appeared between children and adults because of the emergence of a primate category after age 10. (BC)

Cook, Gregory L.; Odom, Richard D. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1992
In four experiments, younger children and adults showed greater perceptual sensitivity and more extensive conceptual labeling for difference relations than for identity relations. Younger and older children demonstrated consistent dimensional selectivity in tasks involving free classification and the estimation of differences. (Author/BG)

Melot, Anne-Marie; Corroyer, Denis – European Journal of Psychology of Education, 1992
Presents study results examining conditions in which children can apply a previously learned memorization strategy to new but analogous tasks. Concludes that strategy mastery during training is not sufficient. Reports that only subjects who use information about relations between procedures and results to construct generalizable knowledge are able…

Macready, George B.; Dayton, C. Mitchell – Psychometrika, 1992
An adaptive testing algorithm is presented based on an alternative modeling framework, and its effectiveness is investigated in a simulation based on real data. The algorithm uses a latent class modeling framework in which assessed latent attributes are assumed to be categorical variables. (SLD)

Heit, Evan – Cognitive Psychology, 1992
Presents a mathematical-categorization model using multiple-step chains of reasoning (CORs) and memory for examples. In 5 experiments, 144 undergraduates memorized descriptions of fictional people, then made predictions from incomplete descriptions using 1-, 2-, or 3-step CORs. The multiple-step context model with one- and two-step inference…

Guastello, Stephen J.; Shissler, James E. – Journal of Creative Behavior, 1994
Personality profiles of industrial scientists, musicians and artists, and general undergraduates (total n=99) showed no difference between scientific and artistic groups on the Creativity composite index. Self-reports of involvement in creative behavior, collected from 590 individuals, revealed that creative people tend to cross-train and to…
