Passages from a standard American history textbook were revised by three pairs of writers: text linguists, college composition instructors, and former Time-Life editors. Students who read the magazine writers' rewrite were able to recall about 40 percent more of what they read than students who read only the original. (KH)

Examined biology textbooks to determine their cancer education content. Because the analysis of six commonly utilized textbooks showed that none addressed all categories related to scientific, clinical, and psycho-social aspects of cancer, it is recommended that textbooks be supplemented with other sources providing information on cancer. Twenty-four survey textbooks in special education, published between 1974 and 1982, were analyzed with formulae of R. Flesch to determine readability levels and human interest. Among results are that the texts are dull and difficult but usually complete in coverage, although some handicaps (e.g., severe/profound) receive scant coverage. (Authors)
