Peer reviewedSchool Science Review, 1981
Reviews the role of logic in the laboratory, group work in science, the role of history and philosophy in school science education, brainstorming in the classroom to invent a model, and the scientific debate. (JN)
Descriptors: College Science, Debate, Elementary School Science, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedChemical and Engineering News, 1982
Reports how Representative Don Fuqua (D.-FL) would improve future U.S. scientific and technical workforce by authorizing money for retraining math and science teachers, improving graduate training in science and engineering, passing the National Engineering and Science Manpower Act of 1982, and improving college laboratories. (DC)
Descriptors: Engineering Education, Federal Legislation, Financial Problems, Government Role
Peer reviewedRyan, Mary Ann; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1980
Described is Xavier University of Louisiana Piagetian-based general chemistry program. Laboratory experiments are in the learning cycle format and place emphasis on learning by doing. Aspects of the curriculum described include synopses of content covered, laboratory-preceding lectures, list of laboratory experiments covered, and evaluation of the…

Peer reviewedHuggins, Elisha R.; Lelek, Jeffrey J. – American Journal of Physics, 1979
Describes a series of laboratory experiments and computer simulations of the motion of electrons in electric and magnetic fields. These experiments, which involve an inexpensive student-built electron gun, study the electron mean free path, magnetic focusing, and other aspects. (Author/HM)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Oriented Programs, Electricity, Electronics
Peer reviewedVitta, P. B. – Physics Education, 1979
This paper, presented at the conference on the role of the laboratory in physics education which was held in Oxford, England in July 1978, describes the problems of physics laboratory courses in Africa. Suggestions for solving these problems are also included. (HM)
Descriptors: College Science, Conferences, Developing Nations, Educational Change
Peer reviewedBennett, Carole A.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Notes the careful observation of chemical reactivity phenomena has been and should be an important part of the general chemistry laboratory curriculum. Stresses reduction of experimental scale will help to ensure, in times of rampant chemophobia, that it remains so. Provides several examples of the methodology. (MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedPerina, Ivo; Mihanovic, Branka – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Presents a halogen substitution of an alkane using a compartmentalized Petri dish or Conway dish on an overhead projector. Provides methodology and several modifications for different reactions. Uses hexane, methyl orange, bromine, and silver nitrate. (MVL)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science
Peer reviewedMatlock, Daniel B.; Safford, Duane C. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1989
Explains the use of the microcomputer as a multipurpose analytical instrument which frees students from the mechanics of science and allows for more active learning involvement. Provides the typical data acquisition configuration, advantages, disadvantages, and a brief summary. (RT)
Descriptors: College Science, Computer Interfaces, Computer Literacy, Computer Uses in Education
Rowe, Mary Budd; McLeod, Richard – Media and Methods, 1988
Discussion of the use of new technologies in science instruction focuses on the medium of CD ROM. Topics discussed include database retrieval; simulations and laboratory experiments; videodisks; hypertext; and software and interfaces for laboratory experiments. A list of math and science resources is provided. (LRW)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Simulation, Computer Software, Databases
Peer reviewedRitt, Laura; Stewart, Barbara – TechTrends, 1996
Describes the development of new teaching strategies in an anatomy and physiology laboratory at Burlington County College (New Jersey) based on laser disc technology, computers with multimedia capabilities, and appropriate software. Lab activities are described and results of a survey of former students are reported, including a comparison of lab…
Descriptors: Anatomy, Comparative Analysis, Computer Assisted Instruction, Courseware
Peer reviewedFryer, Karen Helene – Journal of Geological Education, 1991
Explains how students can learn basic petrographic techniques by using a thin-section collection prepared from the rock units in a geological area under study. Each student defines a particular problem to investigate and is responsible for collecting samples in the field, making additional thin sections, and preparing formal written and oral…
Descriptors: Content Area Writing, Earth Science, Field Trips, Geology
Peer reviewedOdubunmi, Olagunju; Balogun, T. A. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
Compared the laboratory method versus lecture method for Nigerian grade eight students (n=210). High achievers in both groups had identical achievement, but the low achievers in the laboratory sections performed better than students receiving the lectures. Females receiving lectures performed better than the males receiving lectures. (PR)

Peer reviewedFraser, Barry J.; Griffiths, Alan K. – Canadian Journal of Education, 1992
The development and validation of a new instrument, the Science Laboratory Environment Inventory, for assessing student perceptions of psychosocial environment in science laboratory classrooms are described. Results with 3,727 high school students and 1,720 college students at 53 sites in 6 countries support the scale's validity. (SLD)
Descriptors: College Students, Educational Environment, Foreign Countries, High School Students
Peer reviewedKirschner, Paul; Huisman, Willibrord – International Journal of Science Education, 1998
Identifies the problems associated with the use of dry laboratories in science education, presents design considerations for the use of such practicals in science education, and presents examples of innovative nontraditional practicals. Contains 23 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Computer Uses in Education, Concept Formation, Foreign Countries, Hands on Science
Lovrich, Deborah – Science Teacher, 2004
Scientists and students often believe that if they just think harder about a problem, a solution will follow. However, thinking about one's thinking, or using metacognition, can be a more productive expenditure of mental energy. Introducing students to metacognition allows them to discover the value of reflection. This article presents a lesson on…
