A report is made of an experimental German program designed to assess the effects of individualized instruction on four stated areas in a continuous program curriculum. (Author/RM)

Examined briefly are the implications of the recent trends in psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, general linguistics, and the technology of communication for the teaching and learning of languages, particularly English as a second language in India. Some suggestions for improving language instruction in universities are offered. (JMD)

It is argued that Australian university language departments should develop area studies of foreign culture and civilization to cater to the broader interests and career needs of the students and academic community. A discussion of the use of films in foreign language teaching. A particular problem is the lack of readily available foreign language films without subtitles. A procedure for modification of the sixteen millimeter projector in order to obscure subtitles is described in detail. (AMH)

There is a need for expanding offerings in foreign language instruction to reach different age and interest groups, prepare teachers, and educate students for positions in business, industry, and government. For students, foreign language study could be combined with the study of another field. (SW)

An experimental university program in first-year French is described in which a self-instructional, programed text was used. Students proceeded at their own rate and were allowed repeated attempts to meet the minimal requirement of 75 percent mastery. An analysis of questionnaires on the teaching of Francophone literature in colleges and secondary schools. Most studied is the literature of West Africa, Quebec and the Antilles. Teacher training in Francophone literature, establishing rationales, needs assessment and selected sources of information on Francophone literature are discussed. (AMH)
