Two Female Young Adults Reclaiming Refugee Identities: An Ecological Systems Analysis
Multicultural Education Review, v17 n2 p160-178 2025
This study examines the manifestation of identity construction, negotiation, and transformation of two female young adults from refugee backgrounds -- one black Muslim and the other Asian, considering the complex social-ecological systems of refugee camps as well as the challenges of transitioning and resettlement in the United States. Applying the reflective thematic analysis (RTA) method, the study found the ways in which the two participants established social environments enabling them to collaborate with other social agents, confront dominant ideologies of racism and model minority stereotype, and become transformative agents in their multidimensional ecological in culturally and linguistically meaningful ways.
