This paper reports teacher survival rates in the St. Louis metropolitan area and updates a similar 1978 study by the authors. High dropout rates continue to exist in the beginning years of teaching for each entering cohort. Implications for teacher effectiveness, salaries, and future demand for new teachers are discussed. Haviland, Mark G.; And Others – Psychology: A Quarterly Journal of Human Behavior, 1984
Examined the relationship between selected independent variables and graduation from college five years after students (N=1,943) first matriculated. Results showed that the variables accounted for less than six percent of the variability in the graduate/nongraduate criterion with high school rank being the best individual predictor. (Author/LLL)

Two-hundred-fifty fifth graders participated in this study of the effects of evaluation condition and task difficulty on motivation to return to an initial task. The significant effect for difficulty level resulted from the interaction of difficulty level with evaluation condition. Implications for classroom practice are discussed. (Author/MT)

A survey of Wisconsin school districts showed that teacher resignation rates were quite low. Smaller districts faced the highest number of resignations. Resigning teachers tended to be rated by their supervisors as above average. The study results suggest that fears of "teacher flight" may be exaggerated. (PGD)
