Gidena, Asay; Gebeyehu, Desta – International Journal of Science Education, 2017
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the advance organiser model (AOM) on students' academic achievement in learning work and energy. The design of the study was quasi-experimental pretest-posttest nonequivalent control groups. The total population of the study was 139 students of three sections in Endabaguna…

Gürel, Cem; Süzük, Erol – Educational Sciences: Theory and Practice, 2017
This study investigates the quality of argumentation developed by a group of pre-service physics teachers' (PSPT) as an indicator of subject matter knowledge on model rocketry physics. The structure of arguments and scientific credibility model was used as a design framework in the study. The inquiry of model rocketry physics was employed in…

Lewis, Amy D. – ProQuest LLC, 2017
The development of scientifically literate citizens begins in the elementary school. Yet elementary school teachers are ill prepared to teach science (Trygstad, Smith, Banilower, Nelson, & Horizon Research, Inc., 2013). The research base on teacher preparation finds that programs designed to prepare elementary teachers are inadequate in…

Knox, Daniel – ProQuest LLC, 2017
This study addresses gaps in the theoretical and policy literature by examining the relationship between associate degree program credit requirements and four student outcomes: associate degree attainment, time to degree, final associate degree grade point average, and persistence. Using student unit record data, a longitudinal quantitative study…

Nyström, Anne-Sofie; Jackson, Carolyn; Salminen Karlsson, Minna – Research Papers in Education, 2019
Academic achievement is regarded an indicator of the success of individuals, schools, universities and countries. 'Success' is typically measured using performance indicators such as test results, completion rates and other objective measures. By contrast, in this article we explore students' subjective understandings and constructions of success,…

Bajada, Christopher; Kandlbinder, Peter; Trayler, Rowan – Higher Education Research and Development, 2019
Systematic changes to higher education curriculum typically occur within the extended timeframes of formal curriculum review processes. Programmes need to be reviewed periodically for internal and external accountability or to determine whether the curriculum has lost its coherence due to the accumulative effect of continual small-scale changes.…

Greca, Ileana M.; Freire, Olival, Jr. – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2014
Finding the best ways to introduce quantum physics to undergraduate students in all scientific areas, in particular for chemistry students, is a pressing, but hardly a simple task. In this paper, we discuss the relevance of taking into account lessons from the history of the discipline and the ongoing controversy over its interpretations and…

Koponen, Ismo T.; Kokkonen, Tommi – Frontline Learning Research, 2014
In learning conceptual knowledge in physics, a common problem is the incompleteness of a learning process, where students' personal, often undifferentiated concepts take on more scientific and differentiated form. With regard to such concept learning and differentiation, this study proposes a systemic view in which concepts are considered as…

Shivalingaswamy, T.; Rashmi, P. E. – European Journal of Physics Education, 2014
The accurate measurement of speed of light is of great importance in understanding various concepts in Physics in particular and science in general. In Physics we come across various concepts and applications in which high degree of accuracy of speed of light becomes important. In this article we discuss the various attempts made to determine the…

Gates, Joshua – Physics Teacher, 2014
Newton's second law is one of the cornerstones of the introductory physics curriculum, but it can still trouble a large number of students well after its introduction, hobbling their ability to apply the concept to problem solving and to related concepts, such as momentum, circular motion, and orbits. While there are several possibilities for…

Lane, W. Brian – Physics Teacher, 2014
The traditional introductory-level meterstick-balancing lab assumes that students already know what torque is and that they readily identify it as a physical quantity of interest. We propose a modified version of this activity in which students qualitatively and quantitatively measure the amount of force required to keep the meterstick level. The…

Holmes, N. G.; Day, James; Park, Anthony H. K.; Bonn, D. A.; Roll, Ido – Instructional Science: An International Journal of the Learning Sciences, 2014
Invention activities are Productive Failure activities in which students attempt (and often fail) to invent methods that capture deep properties of a construct before being taught expert solutions. The current study evaluates the effect of scaffolding on the invention processes and outcomes, given that students are not expected to succeed in their…

Ding, Lin – Physical Review Special Topics - Physics Education Research, 2014
Discipline-based science concept assessments are powerful tools to measure learners' disciplinary core ideas. Among many such assessments, the Brief Electricity and Magnetism Assessment (BEMA) has been broadly used to gauge student conceptions of key electricity and magnetism (E&M) topics in college-level introductory physics courses.…

Oliveira, V. – Physics Education, 2014
We compare the period of oscillation of an ideal simple pendulum with the period of a more "real" pendulum constituted of a rigid sphere and a rigid slender rod. We determine the relative error in the calculation of the local acceleration of gravity if the period of the ideal pendulum is used instead of the period of this real pendulum.

Corrao, Christian T. – Physics Teacher, 2014
A challenge: Can you create a stable top from a single paper clip? Several interesting solutions to this problem were provided by Takao Sakai from Japan, the requirement of each being that the center of gravity be located on the vertical y-axis at the center of the top. In the simplest configuration, we see that there exists a single angle ?…
