Examined a variety of contentions about research genres by asking more than 100 teachers to read and discuss 5 examples of research, with each example representing a different research genre. A test measuring document, prose, and quantitative literacy of out-of-school youth in Guyana found that only 11% had high levels of functional literacy, a literacy rate much lower than usually reported.
