Reynolds, Lynn – Journal of Offender Counseling, Services & Rehabilitation, 1984
Examines societal institutions that promote sexism and powerlessness, including the family, police and courts, and marriage. Considers the political implications of research generated from biological/psychological disciplines which focus on individual psychopathology and fail to account for cultural determinants of rape. (JAC)

Barona, Andres; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1984
Used the demographic variables of age, race, sex, education, occupation, region of residence, urban versus rural residence, and handedness in the prediction of premorbid IQs for the 1981 revised Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (N=1,880). Results indicated that the regression equations aid in accurate estimation of premorbid IQ. (LLL)

Trent, Curtis; Cabanillas, Franklyn M. – Adult Literacy and Basic Education, 1981
Data were collected from 193 male Army personnel who took the final unit of the General Educational Development (GED) test. Statistical analysis indicated that 11 of the 13 variables were significantly related to GED scores, and at least five (General-Technical score; reading habits involving Army publications, magazines, books, and newspapers)…

Kolevzon, Michael S.; Gottlieb, Susan J. – Journal of Divorce, 1983
Surveyed 157 divorced parents to assess phases of emotional adjustment following divorce. Findings provided no evidence to suggest that particular dimensions of emotional adjustment represent challenges unique to particular stages of divorce. The intensity and the duration of emotional challenges were affected by a number of intervening variables.…

Margolin, Gayla; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examines psychometric and normative questions related to the Areas of Change Questionnaire (AC) for 163 couples. Results offered support for the AC as a measure of overall marital adjustment, revealed differences according to sex and distress, and found that length of marriage influenced actual and perceived requests for change. (LLL)

Jeffords, Charles R. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1983
Examines one's fear of crime while walking in the neighborhood, and in one's home. Results showed age was positively associated with fear of crime in the former situation, but slightly negatively associated in the latter. Suggested that the aged may only be more fearful of crime in particularly dangerous situations. (JAC)

Wiggins, James; And Others – American Mental Health Counselors Association Journal, 1983
Surveyed 126 married couples to study factors related to marital satisfaction. Results showed personality compatibility was a major factor in satisfaction. Individuals whose spouses were more accurate in perceiving their satisfaction and those in relationships with a previous marriage were also more satisfied. (JAC)
Descriptors: Congruence (Psychology), Marital Satisfaction, Personality, Predictor Variables
Blankmeyer, Eric – Online Submission, 2006
Researchers in education and the social sciences make extensive use of linear regression models in which the dependent variable is continuous-valued while the explanatory variables are a combination of continuous-valued regressors and dummy variables. The dummies partition the sample into groups, some of which may contain only a few observations.…

Thayer, Jerome D. – 2002
This paper identifies specific problems with stepwise regression, notes criticisms of stepwise methods by statisticians, suggests appropriate ways in which stepwise procedures can be used, and gives examples of how this can be done. Although the stepwise method has been routinely criticized by statisticians, it is still frequently used in the…

Mundfrom, Daniel J.; Whitcomb, Alan – 1998
Data from records of 99 patients were used to classify cardiac patients as to whether they were likely or unlikely to experience a subsequent morbid event after admission to a hospital. Both a linear discriminant function and a logistic regression equation were developed using a set of nine predictor variables that were chosen on the basis of…

Uhl, Norman; Eisenberg, Terry – Educ Psychol Meas, 1970
Lord's relatively unknown formula, based on the expected cross-sample, is shown to be superior to either of Wherry's formulas, which are based on the expected universe. (GS)

Friedman, Sally; Weisberg, Herbert F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
The first eigenvalue of a correlation matrix indicates the maximum amount of the variance of the variables which can be accounted for with a linear model by a single underlying factor. The first eigenvalue measures the primary cluster in the matrix, its number of variables and average correlation. (Author/RL)

Dutoit, Eugene F.; Penfield, Douglas A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
Assuming a multiple linear regression model with q independent variables, a procedure is developed for determining the minimum statistically significant increase in the multiple correlation coefficient when an additional independent variable is considered for regression. The procedure is presented analytically and in table form. Examples are…
