Peer reviewedGreen, Robert G.; Sporakowski, Michael J. – Journal of Divorce, 1983
Tested Lewis and Spanier's theory of marital quality and marital stability using a sample of 131 married and 166 divorced social survey respondents. Examined the relationship between the quality and stability of their marriages and assessed the influence of alternative attractions and external pressures to remain married. (JAC)

Precollege Characteristics and Early College Experiences as Predictors of Freshmen Year Persistence.
Nelson, Robert B.; And Others – Journal of College Student Personnel, 1984
Examined variables to describe at-risk students among 400 first-semester freshmen, based on test scores, demographics, and a mailed survey. Results showed student observations about their early experiences on campus and their reported future plans were the best predictors. Useful predictors from precollege data involved academic achievement and…

Peer reviewedBaruch, Grace; Barnett, Rosalind C. – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1983
Used an index of "maternal rapport" to examine perceived relationships to mothers of 171 adult women. Overall, relationships were seen as rewarding, particularly by women who were not mothers themselves. Psychological well-being and mother's health were significantly correlated with rapport; daughter's age and mother's marital status…

Peer reviewedHarder, David W.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Assesses the extent to which the Urist Rorschach Mutuality of Autnonomy Scale (MAS) can differentiate levels of pathology in previously hospitalized adults (N=60). Results suggested that the MAS accurately reflects observed pathology severity at time of hospitalization and over a lifetime, but not at the time of assessment. (LLL)
Descriptors: Clinical Diagnosis, Interpersonal Competence, Parents, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedClaypool, Jeffrey C.; Cangemi, Joseph P. – Psychology: A Quarterly Journal of Human Behavior, 1983
Suggests that goal setting and goal achievement are important predictors of success. Some of the necessary ingredients are desire, imagination, concentration, and discipline. Goals must be identified, categorized into short-range and long-range goals, and backed by contingency plans. (JAC)
Descriptors: Achievement Need, Aspiration, Goal Orientation, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedTropf, Walter D. – Journal of Divorce, 1984
Examines the re-ordering of role relationships occurring after remarriage and their effect on child support and personal contacts in a sample of 101 divorced men. Findings suggested that voluntary support increases after the father's remarriage but decreases with the remarriage of the ex-wife. Visiting frequency decreases with remarriage. (JAC)
Descriptors: Divorce, Fathers, Parent Child Relationship, Parent Role
Peer reviewedAday, Ronald H. – Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, 1985
Investigated key variables associated with death anxiety and belief in afterlife among college students (N=181). Results supported the notion that belief in afterlife is primarily a function of religion and not directly a correlate of fear of death. Church attendance was found to be significantly related to both. (JAC)
Descriptors: Anxiety, Beliefs, College Students, Death
Peer reviewedScarpello, Vida; Campbell, John P. – Personnel Psychology, 1983
Explored the usefulness of single-item global measures of job satisfaction for job satisfaction research in a study of 185 employees. Results suggested that the 1-5 global rating of overall job satisfaction may be a more inclusive measure of overall job satisfaction than summation of many facet responses. (JAC)

Peer reviewedBachrach, Christine A. – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1983
Presents data on adoption and characteristics of women who adopt based on a national sample of 8,611 women in 1976. Results showed over half the women who were married, over age 30, had never borne a child, and were sterile for noncontraceptive reasons had adopted. (JAC)
Descriptors: Adoption, Age Differences, Family Characteristics, Family Structure
Peer reviewedMalgady, Robert G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
An analysis of variance procedure for testing differences in r-squared, the coefficient of determination, across independent samples is proposed and briefly discussed. The principal advantage of the procedure is to minimize Type I error for follow-up tests of pairwise differences. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Hypothesis Testing, Multiple Regression Analysis, Predictor Variables
Hann, Della M., Ed. – 2001
Research on child and adolescent conduct problems has proliferated over the past 15 years, resulting in an extensive array of risk factors, processes, and targets for intervention. To capitalize fully on this extensive research base and contribute effectively to public mental health, the field now needs to take stock of what is known about child…

Henard, David H. – 1998
The important and sometimes difficult-to-grasp concept of regression suppressor variable effects is explored. An inquiry into the phenomenon of suppressor effects is accomplished via a synthesis of the existing literature and the use of a small heuristic data set to improve the accessibility of the concept. Implications for researchers are also…

Capraro, Mary Margaret – 2000
This paper illustrates the value of applying the law of parsimony to canonical correlation analysis solutions. The primary purpose of parsimony is that the more parsimonious the solution, the more replicable the model will be. The ultimate goal is to estimate an equal or reasonable amount of variance with the smallest variable set possible. A…

Day, David M.; Bevc, Irene; Rosenthal, Jeffrey S.; Duchesne, Thierry; Rossman, Lianne; Theodor, Frances – 2003
This study examined the relationship between adolescent (10-17 years) criminal offending and adult (18-33 years) offending. The sample comprised 378 Canadian male offenders whose criminal trajectory was tracked for an average of 12.1 years, from adolescence into adulthood. Their man age at the time of the most recent follow-up was 27.5 years. The…

Bevc, Irene; Duchesne, Thierry; Rosenthal, Jeffrey; Rossman, Lianne; Theodor, Frances; Sowa, Edward – 2003
This longitudinal study of 248 male offenders examined the relationship between psychiatric disorders, diagnosed in adolescence, and subsequent adult criminal activity. Criminal offences were tracked for an average of 8.7 years from age 18-33. Cox Proportional Intensity regression analyses were conducted to predict the rates of adult offending of…
