Vito, Gennaro F.; Allen, Harry E. – Criminal Justice and Behavior, 1980
Base expectancy rates were used to evaluate the guidelines of a program intended to "shock" youthful first offenders into law-abiding behavior through brief incarceration followed by probation. Data analysis revealed that prior record was the best predictor of reincarceration. (Author/CS)

Harren, Vincent A.; Biscardi, David L. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1980
College students who made choices of major and occupation were classified according to Holland categories. Findings support the validity of the Holland typology, but also suggest that separate personality descriptions within each category should be provided for each sex. (Author)

Abbott, Walter F. – Academe: Bulletin of the AAUP, 1980
If 1970-77 trends in academic salaries and the poverty level threshold persist, it is suggested, lower-ranking American academicians may expect to enter the ranks of the working poor in the eighties. Some evidence is presented and some options and alternatives are discussed. (MLW)

Sisson, Harriet E.; Dizney, Henry F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
A regression equation incorporating grade point average (GPA), calculus grade, and grades in two sections of the Pharmacy College Admission Test was significantly more useful than using GPA alone. A minimum sum of scores in three PCAT sections was most effective. Cross-validation with new samples was recommended. (Author/CP)

Schofield, Hilary L.; Start, K. B. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1979
Explanations are offered for observed discrepant and null findings in the area of predictive information about teacher effectiveness. It is argued that if tautologies are to be avoided, only product variables are appropriate criteria of success. Some recommendations regarding future research are offered. (Author/GSK)

Proctor, Andrew J.; Ruhling, Robert O. – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1981
This study sought to determine whether three groups of ninth-grade girls--interscholastic basketball players, interscholastic gymnasts, and nonathletes--were similar or dissimilar in seven selected motor characteristics. Nelson, Larry R. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1979
The authors state that multiple regression is a powerful method of statistical analysis, provides a strength of relationship index, and should replace analysis of variance (ANOVA) in educational research. They also discuss the coding of categorical variables and available computer programs for multiple regression. (Author/MH)

Kunen, Seth; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1979
The spread of encoding concept was tested visually by having subjects view pictures which varied in contour completeness. The hypothesis was supported that as contour completeness decreased, the amount of perceptual analysis and memory performance would increase. (Author/MH)

Smith, Monte D. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1979
The investigation explored the possibility of predicting self-concept among 147 learning-disabled children (ages 7 to 13) on the bases of several combinations of predictor variables. The combinations of word knowledge performance, math performance, and family socioeconomic status (SES) significantly predicted self-concept. (Author/PHR)
