Broadbent, Frank W. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1987
A modern adaptation of the historic lattice algorithm which can be used for multiplication and division is discussed. How it works is clearly illustrated. (MNS)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Division, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics

Wohlert, Harry S.; McCormick, Martin – CALICO Journal, 1985
A serious drawback in introducing sound into computer programs for teaching foreign language speech has been the lack of an algorithm to turn off the cassette recorder immediately to keep screen text and audio in synchronization. This article describes a program which solves that problem. (SED)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Artificial Speech, Audiotape Cassettes, Audiotape Recorders

Self, John – Instructional Science, 1986
Considers possibility of developing a computer tutor around an explicit concept-learning theory derived from machine learning techniques. Some problems with using the focusing (and similar) algorithms in this role are discussed and possible solutions are developed. Design for a guided discovery learning system for tutoring concepts is proposed.…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Computer Software, Concept Teaching, Databases

Thiagarajan, Sivasailam; Pasigna, Aida L. – Simulation and Games, 1985
Describes basic structure of a framegame, Chain Gang, in which self-instructional modules teach a cognitive skill. Procedures are presented for loading new content into the game's basic framework to teach algorithms or heuristics and for game modification to suit different situations. Handouts used in the basic game are appended. (MBR)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Design, Educational Games, Formative Evaluation
Byrkett, Donald L. – Collegiate Microcomputer, 1983
Discusses ways to integrate computers into mathematically oriented classes effectively so that advantages are obtained without increasing detrimental effects. Three sections detail use of computers as experimental tools, to implement and understand algorithms, and to solve realistic size problems. These ideas are illustrated with examples from a…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Course Content, Curriculum Enrichment, Higher Education

Vigil, Peter J. – Online Review, 1983
Analytical methods for facilitating comparison of multiple sets during online searching are illustrated by description of specific searching methods that eliminate duplicate citations and a factoring procedure based on syntactic relationships that establishes ranked sets. Searches executed in National Center for Mental Health database on…
Descriptors: Algorithms, Databases, Feedback, Information Retrieval

Duncan, David R.; Litwiller, Bonnie H. – School Science and Mathematics, 1984
Describes eight increasingly sophisticated and efficient sorting algorithms including linear insertion, binary insertion, shellsort, bubble exchange, shakersort, quick sort, straight selection, and tree selection. Provides challenges for the reader and the student to program these efficiently. (JM)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Classification, College Mathematics, High Schools

Moebs, W. D.; Haglund, E. A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1976
Presents a computational method based on a Monte Carlo generation of a large number of chemical reactions. The reactions are allowed to proceed on the basis of relative probabilities. (MLH)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Chemical Reactions, Chemistry, College Science

Davison, Mark L. – Psychometrika, 1976
Proposes a quadratic programming, least squares solution to Carroll's weighted unfolding model with nonnegativity constraints imposed on weights. It can be used to test various hypotheses about the weighted unfolding model with or without constraints. (RC)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Correlation, Goodness of Fit, Hypothesis Testing

Ford, Janet E.; McLeod, Douglas B. – Two-Year College Mathematics Journal, 1977
In this study, a unit on flow charts was developed and its effectiveness in helping teachers explain some algorithms from arithmetic was determined. Findings showed that constructing flow charts helped students give a more complete list of instructions for an algorithm, but didn't help them give better justifications for algorithms. (DT)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Curriculum, Elementary School Mathematics, Flow Charts
McClain, Kay; Cobb, Paul; Bowers, Janet – 1998
This paper discusses an approach to the study of algorithms which values students' construction of nonstandard algorithms but also emphasizes the essential roles of the teacher and instructional activities in supporting the development of students' numerical reasoning. Episodes are presented from a 3rd grade classroom in which a 9-week teaching…

Landa, L. – 1995
The reasons people most often give for the failures of U.S. schools involve poverty, racial inequality, and a host of social problems. This paper argues that even if all these conditions were remedied, the schools would not produce many more people with the ability to think than they do today. Teachers, who are usually able to think, do not know…

Shim, Minsuk; Felner, Robert; Shim, Eunjae; Brand, Stephen; Gu, Kenneth – 1999
This study examined factors related to survey response rate, particularly for teachers who participated in a nationwide survey. Using a newly developed statistical technique, the classification tree algorithm (CART), this study classified the lowest response rate and highest response rate groups based on their school demographic characteristics.…

Wassmansdorf, M. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1974
Descriptors: Algorithms, Arithmetic, Elementary School Mathematics, Fractions

Spence, Ian – Psychometrika, 1972
Discusses the different strategies employed by three practical nonmetric multidimensional scaling algorithms using Monte Carlo techniques. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Computer Programs, Error of Measurement, Evaluation Methods
