A Comparison of the Readability and Reader Education Levels of Five Types of Commercial Periodicals.

Examines the readability and educational levels of 25 periodicals, classified as newspaper format, neutral, minority, male, and female magazines. Indicates that periodicals have similar readability levels but significantly different reader education levels.

Compared three short forms of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (IRF, FAM, and MMPI-168) to the full scale in male veterans aged 60 and over (N=100). Results demonstrated no strong statistical advantage for any short form but indicated that the IRF, because of increased comprehensibility, might have wider applicability. (LLL)

Maddux, Cleborne D.; Candler, Ann C. – Diagnostique, 1984
Ten textbooks on psychological and educational assessment in special education were analyzed with the Flesch formula for reading ease and interest. Reading levels were surprisingly low, human interest scores of eight of the books were classified as "dull," and great disparity was found in the topics treated by the various authors. (Author/CL)
